Whose teachings are these religious nut bags trying to legislate? Religions must stay in the confines of the church, shrine, mosque or synagogue else Africa will suffer dearly. Religion is the cause of most of the violence in the world. From Ireland, Lebanon to Sudan, religion has always show its backwardness, intolerance and contradictons in mixed societies. Black Africans did not become christians nor moslems by free will. It is not authentic to our culture therefore it must be kept seperated from our politics at all cost!!

Once upon a time, in the US constitution, black men were regarded as three-fifths of a man in comparison to white men. Fast forward time and sacrifice, men were regarded as men, whether white or black.
Then, black men were regarded as inferior and not deserving of the same rights as white men. Black men were discriminated against and routinely lynched. Fast forward time and sacrifice again, equal rights and the protection of such rights under the law, were accorded to both white and black men. Today, a black man is the president of the US.
Should I tell the same story about the human beings called women?
Do Ghanaian tradition values regard the status of men as equal to those of women in 2013?
There are no absolute morals. Questions of morality can only be argued and left at that. Mankind is yet to have the balls to come out with a single law by which morality is legislated.
The ideal of the golden rule is the only goal which can be reached for: Do unto others what you want others to do unto you. There is no need to repeat the converse: Don't do unto others what you don't want others to do unto to you.

Ghana has two choices over the next few years; one is to become a progressive, innovative country and the other is to be a traditionalist, conservative one. In a big country like the US you can have it both ways and be successful, as governance is federated into states- so you can have one type of life in New York and another in Utah. However in a small country like Ghana it needs to choose one defined path. I hope Ghana becomes innovative and progressive; this will catalyse the reversal of the brain drain and attract the right sort of professional workers into the fold to help Ghana grow. The sort of professionals who are inclined to think rationally and carefully debate as opposed to shout down dissenting opinion, due to fear or ignorance over their belief systems being challenged.
I hope Ghana chooses progress, and in particular, progresses human rights for all.

Very good piece as always. The responses to your piece so far have been positive. I am sure your blood is boiling for what is happening in our dear country, where intolerance towards the rights of a section of the population is so vehementtly threatened. The sheer hypocracy of our opinion and political leaders is just unbelievable. For me the most disturbing development is the threat by the NUGS leadership to take to the streets against Nana Oye's and possible confirmation. On what basis? The constitution gives the President the power to nominate and for Parliament to approve or reject such nomination. So what makes NUGS the deciders of who becomes a Minister of state. In the developed world, students, the youth are known to be the most progressive part of society. For the traditional and religious leaders, I understand the objections. Their hypocracy we can easily discern, but NUGS?
It is early here in the United States at the time of reading and responding to your article, but very late in Ghana. Kofi, I bet by the time our people wake up and start responding to this your blood pressure will hit the roof. Brace yourself for the homophobes, when they start responding.
What is most disappointing for me is the fact that we, the people of the African race will be this intolerant.
As for the President and his NDC MPs the less said about them the better. What are they afraid of?

Kofi Ata, it is ok that "you do not want to keep silent on such an important subject in the country of my birth."
But it is not ok to refraining from pointing out to "Unnatural Carnal Knowledge" as example of the several hold of from British jurisprudence that our dear Ghana should do every thing humanly possible to do away with.
The British saw the silly of the "Unnatural Carnal Knowledge and the Carnal Knowledge

It would also mean that woman who have sex with other women are excluded from this list.
Meanwhile your British, Kofi Ata, saw the wisdom of given uo a law that is not easy to prove, why we are stuck with a law that is going to criminalization many of our citizens if Mahama administration goes through with this antedeluvian legislation.

A few years back, whilst away on a trip in Europe, I was on phone with a friend in Ghana when she asked what I was doing with so much noise at the background. I told her I was watching the news, and she asked what was going on. At that time, it was a TV coverage of a procession (Carnival) of gays, lesbians and trans-sexuals, so I told her. She sounded surprised, asked if it was legal, and said such a thing can never happen in Ghana. So I asked her why, and she said even the then President (the late Prof. Mills) had said something like “it will never happen on my watch.” I laughed and said it was a thing that will come to pass in Ghana, sooner than later.
She, like many Ghanaians, find homosexuality to be something foreign, immoral, and irreligious, and as such must not be accepted in Ghana. Yesterday I was discussing this same issue with her because of the hullaballoo of Oye Lithur’s appointment and was compelled to tell her that it was high time she stopped looking at the question of homosexuality as foreign. That she better started looking at it as something that is with us. That we have brothers and sisters that practice it here in Ghana, and out there in the Diasporas. That out of the country, our own blood relations who have chosen to be homosexuals have been accepted by the laws of their hosts, and that the battle against it in Ghana will be a battle against our own parents, our own brothers and sisters, and our own children. This is the situation we find ourselves. Her response was that “Even though I know you very well, I’m now having doubts as to your sexuality.” Her response clearly explains the difficulty of many Ghanaians to understand the difference in defending rights and promoting (or supporting) rights.
In response to some articles I have read on this issue, I have submitted that the battle being fought by those saints and moralists, could well be described as a good battle – it is in their right to fight the battle, but they should know that it will be a useless battle because in a few years time, homosexuality will become legal in this country. It may not be in under Mahama’s administration, but it will come to pass for a simple reason. That simple reason is that Ghana has adopted and accepted western-styled multi-party democratic rule as the best form of governance for our beloved nation. What we, in this country must understand is that, this form of governance comes in a package. We have started with the basic elements of the package, and as time goes on, we will be obliged to add the other ingredients. And fortunately (or unfortunately) for us, one of those ingredients is the legal recognition (or de-criminalisation) of homosexuals.
It’s high time we face the facts and realities of life.

I used civilised in quotes, and that should have told you that I did not imply the conventional meaning of civilised. Secondly, I mentioned that Ghana is not an Island. Thirdly, that the adoption of western styled democracy comes in the form of a package. The begining of the package is your vote, which you cherish. But within the package we have other ingredients, such as the legal recognition of homosexuals.
Since you have a difficulty of understanding, I will put it in simple words: For as long as we continue on the road of multi-party democratic rule, we will, sooner than later, make homosexuality legal in our beloved country. Do I honestly wish for it to happen? Will it come to pass? Yes. Can we avoid it? Y.y.y.yes. How? Becoming a pariah state.

we are against oye lithur on her stance on hormosexualism, ghanaians know oye lithur not the day of vetting and her coward statements she made before the vetting committee , but as far back comments ,provocations and writes up on hormos and lesbiens.one main eg is when prof mills declare ghana no go zone for gays, what oye lithur publicly said declare her stands as lesbien, promoter, and protecter- which the people of ghana think, it is dangerious for such a person like oye lithur to head a senitive ministry like gender&children protection ministry, what is she going to protect at that minstry-the rights of gayisms?
I heard people of the arguments that she alone cannot make laws-looking at the public outcry not to approve her to that ministry, which was declined by the parliament, put fear in the citizens that she can get on her ways through that weak and empty head lawmakers.
we are not talking about her competency-if mahama still want her he can give her diferent ministry or position as of the gender &children protection- that is what we are taliking about.
your last paragraph show how hypocrite oye lithur is, how many people had been killed or beating, becouse they are gays or lesbiens ? non .
there are many people who have been imprison unlawfuly, how many people in the country have no good portable water to drink in the country, ,look at the challenges taxi drivers and motrist are going through,- why is it that nobody is advocating for these and corruption in the country but have all the mouth and strength to advocate for something that has not cause any alarm in the country?-
This has to tell you that oye is fighting for her selfish interest by pretentions, and the society should not allow that to go on
oye lithur is the beast mark of 666 -and NDC is going to sufer for that

I know that most of our brothers and sisters like Kofi Atta, Kwesi Tawiah and Nana Oye Lithur think of themselves as being "educated" and "enlightened" because they have been schooled or indoctrinated to think and see issues and events from the Eurocentric or Whiteman's perspective. May be they even think anything that goes on in the so called "civilised" nations has to be right and therefore must be whole heartedly adopted by other peoples who are foreign to Western European cultures and social norms. Whereas everyone is entitled to his or her opinion I take issue with the likes of Kofi Atta, Kwesi Tawiah and Oye Lithur on this homosexuality debate because they seem to think that if there are some people in Ghana or Africa in general with homosexual instincts then we have to be make that lifestyle legal. They seem to think that if we don't make accomodations for homosexual lifetyles then we are voilating the human rights of of those who practice that lifestyle.
In the USA and most of the European nations it is against the law for anyone to practice polygamy. People who engage in polygamy are usually arrested and prosecuted and in most cases they are sent to jail. One would have thought that Europeans and Americans who claim that their societies are built on Judea-christian principles will not have any problems with polygamy because almost all of the biblical prophets practised polygamy and there is nowhere in the Bible that the practice has been forbidden. One would have thought that being that these societies claim to be built on Judea-Christain priciples they would outlaw homosexuality because that practice has been forbidden in the bible, but no they have gone contrary to God's will and promoted or leagalized homosexuality.
Ghanaians and Africans have the right to forbid the practice of homosexuality just as the Europeans and Americans have forbidden polygamy. To each society their own. Polygamy is a social arrangement or contract between three or more consenting adults, so if those engaged in it are happy with it why should the government arrest and punish them? The only answer to that is because whereas that practice is harmless European and American societies are against it because of their own beliefs and principles. In the same vein Ghanaians and Africans should be free and rightly so to reject homosexuality because it is against our beliefs and principles. I hope Kofi Atta, Oye Lithur and our so called "educated and enlightened" folks can appreciate these facts and stop trying to make the rest of the Ghanaian society against homosexuality feel as if we are intellectually lacking or hateful of homosexuals. WE JUST WANT TO PRESERVE OUR OWN BELIEFS AND VALUES LIKE ALL OTHER PEOPLES DO.
