Oye Lithur as a minister is answerable to the President who will never countenance with this evil act. Thus, she will never and can never use her position to promote homosexuality in Ghana. So students, go and learn and stop planning to demonstrate over a no issue. It is even you students at the universities who are gays/lesbians. So educate yourselves.

The depraved students that NUGS represents are the ones who need to be prevented from assuming any roles of responsibility in Ghana. What has NUGS to show for its leadership? These people just put some words together and appoint someone to chop money. "Gender, Children and Social Protection" what does that mean? Does the ministry come under Education? Security? Health Services? O I think I get it. It must be against discrimination.

If it is, why can't we just say Minister for Harmony. That, too, may be too broad. I give up. Time was when every department was well delineated with no dovetailing. We used to have less than 10 ministries. What has happened?

A debate on the Gay Rights issue can only loosen up the society for other repressed, suppressed groups or tribes to come out and voice their own problems, also.
It is a multiplier, but whether the country is strong enough to absorb the complaints of all disaffected groups, is another matter.
The Christian Fellowship people have dominated Ghana's educational system for far too long.
What we see here is a country saturated with conservative ideology, traceable to a long history of post-Nkrumah intellectual decline.
When your student leaders are talking like old time religion and cultural museum pieces, it shows that the country is starved of the creative blood she needs to transform herself.

Elsewhere in the world, except in Islamic Republics, one would have expected a student body like NUGS championing the rights of everyone, including gays and lesbians in the light of modern trends based on scientific insight on homosexuality. But not in Ghana where Christian religious fanatics, outright charlatans and goons have taken over the airwaves and the once dynamic and progressive NUGS too and turn the univ campuses into one vast prayer camps, with lecturers often in charge for disseminating the backward, unscientific cosmogony and cosmology that negate all that is the rational world view that a univ must be espousing.

It was high time the very few of us who are not consumed by this Weberian primitive world view organise to fight them back, if Ghana is to join the civilised world order. The immoral atrocities that the so-called Christians are perpetrating on the gullible population far surpasses the practice of homosexuality which does not pose any danger to the pop.

NUGS should be championing the abolition of trokosi, witches camp and a host of other discriminatory practices embedded in our culture rather than arguing that those customs supersede the Constitution.

NUGS should be campaigning to roll back the horrible injunctions imposed on women at Dove in the Central Tongu District by the Faith Tabernacle sect which bans women from even menstruating and giving birth at Dove! Even people cannot be buried there.

NUGs shld be applauding the chiefs of Donkorkrom, BA, abolishing the ban on women not having birth in the village rather than asserting the sanctity of arcane and backward customs. In any case, can any of those jaded students tell us of any traditional area where gays and lesbians were banned or sanctioned ever?

I sincerely hope the MPs are not intimidated to bow to these threats from people with primitive mentality!

To be set back in this world because you are not hateful or a coward -but are someone willing to go against the current of the society you live in- is something that Jesus himself would commend.
Also this is not just about being gay or lesbian, I have been wondering why this issue irritates me despite that I am not directly affected, and it comes down to this: Ghana cannot progress or become an innovative nation if it cannot accept the harmless misfits and individualists of its society. Those are the people who carry the key to progress and inventing solutions outside of the box, and if they cannot make a home here, then they are forced to do so elsewhere. Also, there are those like me who are not gay or lesbian, but feels that a country that is too illiberal for them is too illiberal for me and my open mind and big mouth. Why ask why there is a brain drain. I would rather give my tax money to a country that tries to care for all of its citizens within reason.

Homosexuality is a criminal offence. We need to strengthen our constitution to make it clear that we do not tolerate this vile practice.

Anyway, it is abject ignorance of Ghanaians/Africans that is behind all this honophobia. How many people reading this knew that Africa, precisely Ethiopia, holds the unenviable record of being the oldest and longest supplier of eunuchs, i.e., castrated men, that form the backbone of homosexuality in ancient civilizations to choiresters in the Vatican until the C19th. Great human societies have faded away because at some point in their progress they made certain untold mistakes such as being too receptive and too understanding coupled with degradation of the very fundamental values that had led them to great success. I have had the opportunity to travel to and also lived in many places in this world and one thing I have learned is that everyone society has what is acceptable or unacceptable to them depending on their beliefs and customs. There are Ghanaians and other Africans who whole heartedly believe that whatever is acceptable in Eurocentric societies like Britain and America has to be good and therefore should be accepted by Ghanaians or Africans, but that is totally WRONG!

In America and some European countries it is unacceptable to practice polygamy and if anyone engages in polygamy they are arrested, prosecuted and sent to jail. Why will polygamy be considered a crime when almost all the biblical prophets practiced it? And why is polygamy a crime when it is a social contract entered into by consenting adults? The only answer to these questions is because Eurocentric societies are against it due to their own beliefs.

If Eurocentric societies are so much against polygamy to the extent that they throw people in jail for practicing it why can't Ghanaians and Africans reject homosexuality to the extent that they can legislate against it and also deny government appointments to those who promote it?

I think NUGS is right because they are the future leaders of Ghana and it is better for them to fight any seeds of societal evil now than to wait for it to grow and become a monster that detroys the social fabric in Ghana.

If one should investigate, it would not be surprising to find that in the homes in which these privileged-students grew up in, they had maids and house-boys who were denied basic education and who had to be at their beck and call. These same students would hide behind religion to commit horrendous crimes. They are intellectually bankrupt and do not read widely. I have observed that the only reading most Ghanaians do is religious leaflets or books. The proliferation of churches is an indication of the gullibility and superstitious backwardness of our people. There is one thing I discovered, some of them are very confused about themselves, some of them are very scared to talked to women, some of them think they might get sexaully transmitted diseases, some of the women do not want to have children and therefore and do not want to take medication to prevent pregnancy therefore chose to make love to men. The answer to these questions is that those people have forfeited those rights and freedoms by their actions. In Ghana, our Moral Law, which surpasses any written one(of which there is none in support of homosexuality), is strictly against same sex marriage. Any person in Ghana who dares practice this evil act is by his or her actions forfeiting his or her right to live. If any person who claims to have learnt Law supports them or think they have rights( the ones they forfeited by their actions), then, that person stands as an enemy of the Republic. so how can Oye Lithur, an enemy to the Republic(by her actions) be given a chance to serve the State? What you should rather advocate for is amendment of the constitution of Ghana which has said nothing about homosexuals,whether it is an offense, crime or set up punishment for people indulged in it.Remember, she is a human rights activist whose job is to protect the rights of people until they are judged as guilty by any court of law.Please NUGS concentrate on very vital issues and leave these political propaganda. Nana Oye has not advocated the legalisation of homosexuality as a recognised cultural norm. All she has eever said and advocated is the protection of the guaranteed constitutional rights of a minority group of Ghanaians whose sexual orientation happens to be different from those of the majority.
Oye is not advocate of homosexuality as an alternative life style for our country. She is only an advocate for the protection of minority rights.
How do you justify criminal violence against people just because they happen to be gay/lesbian?
Whether gayism/lesbianism is a "life style"c choice or a genetic or physiological expression of sexual behaviour is a moot point. This should not result in mass hysterical violence against such people.
What we need to remember is that our constitution recognises these diversities in the rights to freedom of association and expression.
Gayism/lesbianism may not be culturally acceptable, but this rejection should never be expressed in violence. This is what Oye is all about.

Homosexuality is a criminal offence. It is a taboo in our society. We will not allow WEsternised liberal thinkers to usurp our norms and traditions.

Some Western countries are trying to force us to accept homosexuality and change our laws to accommodate gays. David Cameron tried to withdraw aid to us if we did not change our laws, but this was firmly rejected by our late President MIlls. A British minister, Byrne had tried to interfere in our national life by condemning the Western Regional minister for his stance against reported homosexuality in Takoradi. Byrne had the effrontery to tell our minister of state that Paul Aidoo's views were unacceptable.

With such pressure being out on us and also through various NGOs who are using the likes of Nana Oye as a front for their nefarious activities, it is necessary for NUGS and other recognised bodies like thje church to make a public stance for the defence of our norms and values.

Nana Oye is a danger to our society. She should not be allowed anywhere near the Ministry.

As a public officer designate, also a human right advocate, she has to be professional in public statements. This means, she has to repress her personal opinions about policy. After all, she didn't create the Ministry of "Gender." The label gender connotes, among others, same-sex in the political correct language.
Those who have problems with Miss Lithur's language, should first admit to their own naivety about the term "gender".

Many of us wrongly presuppose that when it is said that, a person has human rights, it means support for the persons wrongdoings.
Human rights are for human beings. The only qualification to have to qualify for human rights is that you must be a human being.
Everybody has human rights. So protecting the rights of homosexuals is no support for homosexualism. In fact human rights is of God. Even though God does not deiight in sin, he loves us regardless. That is why instead of striking us dead for our sins, He sent His only Begotten Son Jesus to come and die for us to cleanse us from our sins if we believe Him.
Even though we can argue that homsexuality is morally wrong, the fact still remains that, homosexuals unlike say thieves, are not inflicting any harm on others except on themselves. You and I who are not homosexuals do not have any attraction to it because we are well aware in our mind and body that sexual relation must be with the opposite sex and we know how enjoyable it is. For someone to deny him/herself this enjoyment and to look for it in the same sex is difficult to understand.
For instance if someone chooses to eat cockroach for his protein instead of chicken, we do not have to attack him but pity him. Homosexuals do not deserve to be attacked but pitied. It is because we wrongly attack them that they need protection.
Indeed as a constitional democracy, our laws are the basis by which any person can be said to have committed a wrongdoing and for that matter the basis by which any perosn's rights can be curtailed.

Also this is not just about being gay or lesbian, I have been wondering why this issue irritates me despite that I am not directly affected, and it comes down to this: Ghana cannot progress or become an innovative nation if it cannot accept the harmless misfits and individualists of its society. Those are the people who carry the key to progress and inventing solutions outside of the box, and if they cannot make a home here, then they are forced to do so elsewhere. Also, there are those like me who are not gay or lesbian, but feels that a country that is too illiberal for them is too illiberal for me and my open mind and big mouth. Why ask why there is a brain drain. I would rather give my tax money to a country that tries to care for all of its citizens within reason.

Secondly, is she being vetted for the position of anti Gay and Lesbianism affairs where there is the likelihood of her not kicking against it?
As much as I strongly support Ghanaian society frowning upon homosexuality which is a recipe for disaster to the Ghanaian belief and envious culture, the NUGS should have thought a little above the streets.
Nana Oye is to serve as a minister in charge of other fragile and important issues eating the Ghanaian society of which homosexuality is key but not paramount over the others. Should she also be denied the position for the other areas she is an addend champion to be starved?
What is going on is enough warning to Nana Oye to distance herself from ever supporting homosexuality both in the open or secretly.
The solution; since she is now wearing a jacket of controversy which is of maximum importance to every Ghanaian, she should be made to swear an oath never to support Homosexuality in any way or attempt to legitimize it.
If she refuses, then she should humbly give up that appointment.
The NUGS should go back and rethink about other ways of ensuring that Homosexuality never becomes a practice in Ghana instead of planning to hit the street, for that would be unnecessary in these intellectually driven days of our lives.
There are various ways to check what their fear and almost every Ghanaian’s fear is all about. The street is not the answer.

One Luther is a modern well-thinking progressive woman. In my opinion she far far better than some of our so-called honourable members o parliament. The fact that she strongly advocates the rights of gay and lesbian women does not make her less capable as a minister. Her approval as a minister for whatever position will clearly show the world that Ghana is well and truly progressive country. My advice to the NUGS is this, fight for the rights of the under privilege in our country; campaign for social justice; fight tribalism which has slowly crept into our politics; support Green Peace; get government to eradicate malaria that kills hundreds of our children; highlight corruption that has permeated every aspect of Ghanain life; campaign for road improvements, pot holes and ill-maintained vehicles - all of which cause countless and totally avoidable deaths on our road, etc. above GROW UP.

I have read so many of the comments for and against the NUGS stand and I am somewhat baffled by some of our "educated" folks who think if anyone is against homosexuality that person has to be backward or lacking respect for human rights.

I have had the opportunity to travel to and also lived in many places in this world and one thing I have learned is that everyone society has what is acceptable or unacceptable to them depending on their beliefs and customs. There are Ghanaians and other Africans who whole heartedly believe that whatever is acceptable in Eurocentric societies like Britain and America has to be good and therefore should be accepted by Ghanaians or Africans, but that is totally WRONG!

In America and some European countries it is unacceptable to practice polygamy and if anyone engages in polygamy they are arrested, prosecuted and sent to jail. Why will polygamy be considered a crime when almost all the biblical prophets practiced it? And why is polygamy a crime when it is a social contract entered into by consenting adults? The only answer to these questions is because Eurocentric societies are against it due to their own beliefs.

If Eurocentric societies are so much against polygamy to the extent that they throw people in jail for practicing it why can't Ghanaians and Africans reject homosexuality to the extent that they can legislate against it and also deny government appointments to those who promote it?

I think NUGS is right because they are the future leaders of Ghana and it is better for them to fight any seeds of societal evil now than to wait for it to grow and become a monster that detroys the social fabric in Ghana.

You mean you cannot walk and chew chewing gum at the same time? I am not aware of anyone who would like to ignore the rights of innocent children and youth. But those rights are better protected when ALL rights of ALL people are equally respected and equally taken seriously. Then a culture of respect for HUMAN rights takes hold, and it becomes more difficult to ignore ANY rights.
And who says that some of those "innocent" children and youth are not gay right now, rendering them innocent no more, I suppose.
I guess the science on homosexuality may not yet be fully settled as to whether it is a voluntary behavior or an inherited condition, and I feel that both exist. But by the time I went abroad for the first time, homosexuality appeared to be non-existent in Ghana (at least as far as I knew), and I used to argue with my European and American friends that if this thing occurs naturally, why is it almost no-existent in Ghana, or Africa generally.
The fact that it now manifests itself more clearly in Ghana and Africa could either show that it was there all along but in the closet because society did not tolerate it (which was the case in Europe and America in earlier times), or that more Africans have learnt about it from abroad.
I would go with the former, precisely because Europe and America also went through the phases of hide and seek before finally breaking out. And who did they learn it from?
