Dove; A Town Where It Is A Taboo To Menstruate, Give Birth And Bury The Dead

It is a taboo for women to give birth to babies or even menstruate in Dove, a town in the Mafi Traditional Area of the Central Tongu District.

As such, those expecting their menstruation and pregnant women in labour are by whatever possible means carried out of the town. They only return after delivery and after their menses have stopped.

This revelation was made by Dr Joseph Nuertey, the Volta Regional Medical Superintendent, when he delivered the state of health care in the region during the first general meeting of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs (VRHC) at Ho.

Dr Nuertey lamented that because of the age-long taboo, all efforts by the Ministry of Health (MoH) to establish a health facility to take care of birth and other issues had proven futile. He added that the taboo also forbade the burial of the dead in the town.

The medical superintendent, therefore, appealed to the VRHC to use their good offices to appease the gods in the area to lift the taboo. Dr Nuertey's revelation left the traditional rulers dumbfounded.

This prompted the Paramount Chief of the Battor Traditional Area, Togbega Patamia Dzekley VII, to say that he would immediately contact the chief and elders of Dove to see what could be done to resolve the issue

In most circumstances, it is the women, who are mostly farmers that nurture the children until maturity. According to the medical superintendent, he has been told that the gods of the town frown on anybody who flouts the taboo.

Dr Nuertey announced that maternal mortality in the region continued to be too high and this he attributed to the inadequate number of medical personnel and facilities in the region.

The banking business is one area we must stop the army from going into. This could lead to massive corruption in the Executive arm of government whose leader is the President and Commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
How do we expect personnel working in the bank, under the usually strict and hierarchical military command structure to divulge information when the Executive decide to stash millions of state money in the accounts of the bank.
This can also lead to military adventurism where they take control of so much resources and meddle in affairs of governance especially in this our sub-region.
Technical, per the constitution on its face value as it is now, the military can go into any business venture including, banking but many times the constitution was and must be interpreted on the platform of public interest.
Let us take partisanship out, and discuss this issue dispassionately. I am all for Amoning going to the SC for interpretation when this licence is granted.

It's unfortunate Paa, to subject yourself to such plain ridiccule by baselessly attacking the personality of Foh Amoaning instead of the content of his submission. He addresed himself well but quoting the constitution and even evoked the bye-laws of the banking industry of the country to make his argument and for those, I THINK HE IS RIGHT!

In the US for example, there is the USAA and the NAVY FEDERAL banks who mainly cater for the military and the relatives. Note, these were not military establishments. The USAA for example was started by retired military officers who wanted to insure and provide further banking and financial needs for themselves. It evolved and incorporated the military and its families. It is free and you don't have to join if you don't want to - Not even if you are Military. It is owned by its clients, so if you are/were military, you can bank here with your family. That says same for VETERANS, and as a result you are an owner of the bank as you will then share in the profit based on your contributions to banking and insurance. NOTE: This is a model that was generated by outsiders not the military with the military in mind and focus.

What the Ghana Army is doing is different. They want to own it and the constitution is plain and open for further interpretation by the supreme court on all issues that looks bleak and foggy. Foh Amoaing is simply saying, "I WILL LET/WANT THE SUPREME COURT INTERPRETE THAT PART OF THE LAW IN RELATION TO THIS MATTER." Why attack him for that? At least we should feel blessed to have people who want to put time into such issues instead of letting organizations flount simple constitutional mandates with self seeking impunity. Next, we would have an AIRFORCE BANK, ARMY BANK, THEN NAVY BANK, GHAPOHA BANK, MINISTERS AND PARLIAMENT SQUATERS BANK, IRS BANK...and the list could go on.

Thanks Foh Amoaning for championing sanity on such matters. Please go on and help shape the country for a globular administrative competency that stands on truth and clarity in the interpretations of the books and what we all voted and accepted into law... and as such follows the simple logic of THE RULE OF LAW!

The Educational Sector (Schools) have already embraced that.

Their professional discipline is so low that they are highly inclined to make coups d'etat at the snap of a finger. Our men in uniform have the core business to ensure peace in our country. They are to defend the constitution of Ghana. A Credit Union for the Army and in fact, for the employees of many other established commercial enterprises is good for the economy. Credit Unions are owned by all the employees of an established company or organization equally. You become a member for a small one-time contribution of say 50 cedis. You are a member as long as you remain an employee of that establishment. You do your banking there; you get cheaper loans there. They can manage your retirement savings for you. Your pay can go directly to your account at the credit bureau. However, it is important not to grant too many Credit Union licenses, because it could hurt the profitability of the commercial banks.

A commercial bank license to the Ghana Armed Forces is not a good idea.

I personally think the lawyer should suggest alternatives and not condemn the idea of the military. His interpretation of the constitution in the situation seems a bit off tangent. What the lawyer needs to realize is things are hard and everybody in Ghana is trying to survive. The military has the obligation to protect and defend the country but they need to feed their families too. Foh- Amoaning needs to calm down and assess the situation carefully before threatening to take the case to the supreme court. I think it's all about semantics. The word "banking" is a bit of an overstretch....Maybe the correct terminology should be Credit Union.For all you know, Foh-Amoaning is being instigated by the commercial banks in Ghana to decimate the military's idea. I think such a venture will be good for the military families in Ghana and the entire country. I would want to see the issue taken to a higher level by establishing a "Forces Credit Union" that will cover not just the military but the Police, Prisons,Fire Service, Customs, Immigration etc
