just take a critical look of the psychiatric hospital in a nation of Ghana over fifty years of independence and you relise that GHANAIANS are all mentally retarted including that chief psychiatrist.

SHAME ON THEM FOR DRESSING UP AND ATTENDING SO CALLED MEETINGS HERE AND THERE. IT IS ALL A WASTE. SOMETHING MUST BE DONE IMMEDIATELY. REMEMBER WHEN ANAS UNCOVERED SOME TRUTHS AT THE HOSPITAL? YES, NO ONE DID ANYTHING ABOUT IT. SHAME

This is a very sad story but it really is the true state of affairs of our nation's health system. All our politicians do is spend huge sums of money to be voted into power and spend the majority of their term in office misplacing resources and the nation's priorities. What a SHAME!! This situation (where there are no drugs) should never happen again at any of our psychiatric hospitals.

I totally agree with you Kobina. For a long time successive govts have ignored the health sector especially mental health. The Accra Psychiatric Hospital is over 120years old and no longer serves the needs of a modern mental hospital. Pantang Hospital was built by the late Dr Kwame Nkrumah to contain more modern facilities that will enhance patient care and management of the acute mentally ill patients and with the aim of re-locating the present hospital which is now too close to the city centre. What happened to the Pantang Hospital after Dr Nkrumah was overthrown?-abandoned and successive govts has not taken any interest in completing the facility. Now the uncompleted buildings are been occupied by squatters and the lands around the Pantang Hospital has all been encroached and taken over by unauthorised developers. The Ministry of Health is aware of this but no concrete action has so far been taken on this. As a Mental Health Nurse who trained at both the Accra Mental Hospital and Pantang Hospital, it aches my heart to hear such tragic news which can be prevented if our health policy makers have shown more interest in this area.
I can see how Dr Osei who is my friend is struggling to manage affairs of the hospital with lack of drugs, equipments and manpower. It is a pity that in this day and age hospitals should lack basic sedatives an tranquilisers to calm aggressive and volatile patients to the extent of them committing grievous harm and murder. I hope the Mahama administration will take this issue seriously and review the health sector policies especially mental health. We must remember that everyone is prone to mental illness.

The next of kin of the deceased and severely injured should take the Ministry of Health and the Accra Psychiatric Hospital to the cleaners by suing them.

the Dr should be fined for negligence and jailed for giving such flimsy excuse! How long does it take someone to strangle another to death? Where were the nurses on duty? And they will let him off the hook. Incredible Ghana!

Now someone's mother, wife, sister and daughter's life is cut short because of inadequate surpervision and lack of drugs. Please do everything to get necessary resources as these people lives will continue to be in danger if nothing is done to expedite this. May her soul rest in peace and everyone involve be comforted.
