It is good to have Ghanaian troops in Mali. They can help with evacuation of Ghanaians in Mali if possible. There are currently many Ghanaians living in Mali and paying income tax in Ghana so it is worth it.

Mali is weak militarily, Niger is a poor and even weaker., Senegal is a vulnerable and can be defeated in a matter of months, Chad is already a zone for the alqaida in the islamic maghreb and Bokko Harram has covered northern Nigeria already so the only safe countries are Ghana, Ivory Coast , Togo and Benin since Liberia and Sierra lione are already war zone.

It is right that Ghana is joining other countries in the region in helping Mali repel these extreme Salafis.

Islam has been in West Africa since the 11th. century . It has been practised, as with Christianity, in accordance with our traditions and customs. We cannot have some new forces coming from outside of the area to tell us or impose upon the people how to practice the religion. It is the path to creating social disorder and fermenting intolerance .

All over the world there is an aspect of the Islamic religion, particularly the Wahabbis from Saudi Arabia, who are going round wrecking havoc with the practice of Islam in other countries. This is what is happening in Pakistan for example as reported in Sunday, 13 January english.alarabiya.net

Here 3,000 villagers live in harmony with their Sunni neighbours. They worship at the same mosque, guard each other’s religious processions, grow up together, intermarry and live in peace without fear or retribution.

“I’ve witnessed this Shiite-Sunni brotherhood from my childhood, you can say from the day I was born,” Mohammad Bashir, an 80-year-old farmer told AFP in the village, 130 miles (208 kilometers) southeast of the capital Islamabad.

“We are all Muslims and creatures of one Allah,” he added.

On Friday afternoons, Shiite and Sunni clerics perform the call to prayer from the same, small mosque with marble flooring. One after the other, Shiites and Sunnis make their ablutions and enter the mosque to worship.

“Islam is a religion of peace, so we never say a word in our sermons which can create trouble for others,” said Maulana Zille Hasnain, a Shiite prayer leader.

But in parts of Pakistan, that is no longer the case.

On 26th of December 2012 BBC Asia reported that the Shi’a minority is under heavy attack. Men, women, and children have been assaulted, schools damaged, and villages burned to the ground. Many have been killed.

It is becoming increasingly clear that Saudi Arabia’s intolerant brand of Wahhabi Sunni Islam—propagated far and wide by Saudi oil money—is behind most of assaults.

What is happening in Mali is clear. It is another type of intolerant Islam of die hard Salifi Muslims who are opposed to the way the religion has been practised in the country for generations and want to impose their brand on the people.

They cannot be allowed to have their way
