A very welcome news from the NGO. They should constantly remind the government of the promise to ensure that we produce high quality vegetables in Ghana specifically in the Mankessim area to stop the importation of vegetables from other countries. The NGO should also lobby for our children in the boarding schools to be given fruits at least twice a week and vegetable meal once a week. The demand for these produce would motivate a lot of people to go into farming to produce them as there would be ready markets or them. If our hotels are also encouraged o provide bead and breakfast services and some of these fruits and vegetables are given, a very huge market would b created for these and people who take to producing them, carting them from the farms, and selling them would earn income. Even drivers who transport them would gain financial benefit. The health benefits of eating fruits and vegetables are not lost on me.

I am sorry to pour cold water on your vision because this model is flawed in many ways.
there is no government since independence that hasn't tried to elevate the rural poor through agriculture. billions of donor funds are poured into initiative after initiative that promise so much but deliver little. the flaw is simply in the numbers which don't add up. If you expect to help each farmer individually you suddenly realise you have over 10 million people to deal with; a recipe for wastage, inefficiency and corruption at all levels. The subsidies and support will go a long way but it is not sustainable because once the funds dry up you are back to square 1. I note that you mention agribusiness at the tail end of the letter; the usual expectation is that farmers will grow to become profitable agribusinesses. Well, wrong again. AGRIBUSINESS should not be an after thought or a future objective. Agribusiness principles should be at the core of every initiative from the start. Efficiency, profitability, sustainability, innovation and competitiveness should be the drivers of all agricultural investment, not some social intervention based on benevolence to the vulnerable poor. Government should rather focus on putting in place the structures that will make farming profitable such as storage and processing facilities, access to markets, simplified land tenure, links to agricultural research and market information dissemination. With these in place agriculture will be a profitable endeavour that all manner of people will gravitate to. private investment will pour in because of less risk and the small 3 acre farmer will be able to use his strengths to thrive in the sector in the long term.
