  Look yoou reporters when you are writing for us the illiterates to read use simple English so that we will understand. After all you were not writing for the technocrats. You rather confuse us and end up calling us illiterates so you can give us free education. What the hell is all this basket there and basket here what. When you do it next time I will tell my village folks not to read for them to be promised free education because of this jargons. We are not happy at all okay.

  A basket of goods and services refers to the items used to calculate the consumer price index.
  
  Since the GSS wants to measure the rate at which prices are rising, it periodically collects data on how the sverage family in Ghana spends its money eg on food, rent, clothes entertainment etc. The key items of expenditure are thereby identified and assigned weights in an index in proportion to their relative importance as revealed by the data. It is assumed that these weights remain stable until the next rebasing of the index (This is a strong assumption - the reality is that expenditure patterns change over time).
  
  The month and year in which the data is collected is taken as the base year,with the Consumer Price Index assigned a value of 100. Subsequent data collected monthly on prices are used to calculate values of the index relative to the base period.
