This has being a traditional practice spanned over centuries when education was not there just as any other primitive practices been practiced by other traditions is not because of poverty as Anas would want readers to believe nor because the family can not take care of the child that is not the case.

The spirit child story is true,that is why in such communities you can not found adults with certain traits because those ones are finished during their infancy,

you can not find dwarf sized beings and other weird personalities there and this has been the practice,

Traditions have respect for medicine men who were powerful and feared,they misled the communities in the past, they were regarded as the professors, the consultants, the repository of what is good or bad for their communities, they were consultants between the spirit world and the physical, real men of God were scares, that was their time and the way they perceive things and do things and they are of their time

because knowledge was limited in the world.You can not bring police matter into this nor labeling it as crime, the people themselves do not regard this as crime but a way of life ,

that is the only way to control what they regard as undesirable in their societies ,no hospitals, no special homes to take care of such challenges.The solution is education,what did Anas say, he said this is being practiced in the remote communities, it mean no education there, illiteracy is the order of the day, so who to blame, you have to set up schools in those communities so as to enable them have glimpses of the modern world, libraries ,electricity so that they can watch films to appreciate other cultures and practices and other programs and the most important structures are the schools for the special child where such children can be taken care of.

I agree with you that poverty, per se, is not the main reason for the tradition. The abnormality and the fear of replicating that abnormality through the generations and comunities is the main reason for "culling the freaks"; and this is a universal reaction. In fact, the natural elimination of "unfavourable traits" is the main tenet of Darwin's natural selection. In short, nature "kills" most of the abnormal intities sooner or later. In some cases, what Ghanaians and other human societies are doing is completing a refining process that, they think, nature failed to complete.

Lastly, I agree that education is the surest approach to changing people's minds and getting rig of the tradition.

What baffles me is that these things still go on in the regions that were given free education and have had two Heads of State, Presidential Vices and a lot and lot of national politicians and governmental ministers. My question is, did the northern politicians told their people the truth about education to eradicate such stupid believes and what did they do about such acts that could be best describe as the acts evil?

The next pathetic story is that of the old in the society wrongly accused of being witch with some beaten to death without any arrest or prosecution. Ghana is going forward and will never be the same we see today.

Its not only about arrest that can stop this act. If you listen to the culprits they thin it is just a traditional act. To stop evil from happening to others in the community.

A very intensive education had to be carried out to sensitize the community as a whole and not only the culprits. This is an age old thing. To reconcile the community and the world communication strategies and other well developed opportunities need to be used to correct this

This has being a traditional practice spanned over centuries when education was not there just as any other primitive practices been practiced by other traditions is not because of poverty as Anas would want readers to believe nor because the family can not take care of the child that is not the case.The spirit child story is true,that is why in such communities you can not found adults with certain traits because those ones are finished during their infancy,you can not find dwarf sized beings and other weird personalities there and this has been the practice,Traditions have respect for medicine men who were powerful and feared,they misled the communities in the past, they were regarded as the professors, the consultants, the repository of what is good or bad for their communities, they were consultants between the spirit world and the physical, real men of God were scares, that was their time and the way they perceive things and do things and they are of their time because knowledge was limited in the world.You can not bring police matter into this nor labeling it as crime, the people themselves do not regard this as crime but a way of life ,that is the only way to control what they regard as undesirable in their societies ,no hospitals, no special homes to take care of such challenges.The solution is education,what did Anas say, he said this is being practiced in the remote communities, it mean no education there, illiteracy is the order of the day, so who to blame, you have to set up schools in those communities so as to enable them have glimpses of the modern world, libraries ,electricity so that they can watch films to appreciate other cultures and practices and other programs and the most important structures are the schools for the special child where such children can be taken care of.

Are you really out of your mind or something? How can you condone these evil men act as traditional practice? Killing innocent children is a traditional practice so society should not worry about it, but rather educate those criminals in addition to providing them with libraries, electricity.

If those killers don't see what they are doing as a crime as you quoted, the rest of Ghanaians see it as a serious crime. They should be separated from the Ghanaian people as I see them as UnGhanaians without "human" soul and heart.

Based on the story, the police were initially acting as if nothing of that sort was going on.

You cannot blame Anas for not providing solutions. It is up to the government to act after hearing these bizarre stories. Every society has a history of traditional practice, but that should not be use as the excuse to murder people. It is up to the government to weed out those criminals who commit heinous acts in the name of traditional practice.

This to me is the most useful piece of investigative journalism ever produced in Ghana. One aimed at bringing real positive change. It is unique in bringing to issue a very elusive and exceedingly disturbing practice that nearly every Ghanaian knows about and yet have never bothered to challenge.
The identified issue is by no means the only backward and undoubtedly shameful cultural practice to be reported out of Ghana and other Sub-Saharan country and Anas brings it home in the most brilliant of ways.
I am particularly drawn to the key questions asked at the end of the video. What happens now? Jail them under the glare of publicity and the issue goes to sleep another 55 years?
Do we not all carry a share of the blame? Well, some people are already pointing fingers at other tribes also known to be complicit in carrying on these barbaric practices. Such behaviour only serves to divert attention from the real business of engineering social change in behaviour and attitudes. These people might have had a better appreciation of their actions if livelihoods and educational opportunities had been extended to them. Then they would understand and appreciate how precious young people were to the future development of a country.
Thank God that no young person was killed this time and next time we talk about the dastardly actions of those criminally minded people in the video let us think again. Who really is to blame?

But we also need to look at the whole situation from a preventive perspective, since it involves traditional believe. The best way to hand this situation is the jail them for a while (6 to 12 months), then make them advocates to stop that practice. That will be very effective way to eradication this traditional believe. They would be able to dissuade other practitioners in the north. They can be converted from liability to asset of the society.

I absolutely agree with you that, bringing the perpetrators of this killing to justice or the threat of doing so will have the effect of minimizing this trend if not eliminate it. But what I want to emphasize is something that goes beyond the legal framework which is attitude. It took a long time to solidify this practice, and make no mistake it will take some time to eliminate it. But in order to do this effectively, the government and the people must educate those involved about the importance of life and more importantly that it is normal to sometimes have a child with some disabilities. It could happen to anyone; rich or poor, Ghanaian or non-Ghanaian. It may be compelling for those involved in this practice to buy into the evil causes of those disabilities since that is what society knows, but the people must be re-awakened to the reality that those problems know no boundary or tribe or family.In other words it is not necessarily an evil spirit that isolates or targets those families with special-needs children, this is something that happens everywhere in the world. Government must also provide some aid to faimilies under this circumstance in order to alleviate some of the burdens imposed upon them. Attitudes must changed through education and only through such effort can the stigma attached to this trend be eliminated.

Thanks for waking us all up to this undeniable reality.

Ghana has the fortune in 2013 of having elected a man form the Northern part of Ghana who should be more familiar with this practice and hence possibly expected to have more sensitivity to these crimes and disgrace. Where others have failed to take action, we expect President Mahama to make this a priority. All he has to do is make a public announcement condemning this practice, educating the public that this is a crime punishable by life imprisonment, as also other child-girl slavery such as Trokosi in the Volta Region. This is what leadership is expected to do. All child abuse customs in Ghana should be outlawed and punishment enforced.

Failing this national voluntary elimination of these backward practices, we strongly recommend the United Nations to take some responsibility for bringing these criminal acts to the General Assembly for discussion and shame of the respective nations. It is time the UN stood up against crimes we all know and pretend is the sovereign right of such nations, whiles at the same times the world stands to help them in case of natural disasters. No nation should have the right to kill their own people, Period!

well done Mr Journalist. I believe this is happening in many parts of Ghana not only in the Northern Region. The so called "River babies" are still ongoing.It is time for Ghana to set up services for this helpless babies.

Although, it is said in law that "ignorance is not an excuse" to crime etc., Considering the mass illiteracy in Ghana, the Ghana Justice Department should educate the public especially rural folks in basic law and crime. This could be done through the media, civic education, etc. The Ghana Information Service (if still exists) can take charge of this important endeavour.
Every Summer, senior students from our law schools, and staff from the information and Ghana Education Services alike, could hold "legal Clinics" to educate the masses.
Fresh graduates from our law schools could be assigned this job as part of their National Service.
The truth is, the Ghanaian population needs to be given education in basic law and and basic science. Ghana shouldn't wait for me to become the Vice President in 2020 before embarking on this national campaign or strategy. No, please start NOW. The future of Ghana is NOW!

The northern ghana is a freezone for education. 21 March 2006 was set aside for europeans to remember such people. their IQ is very low making it difficult to enjoy normal life.The state must institutionalize those with DS or mongoloid because over 50 are born in every society or ethnic group.
