It's because nobody thought Akans will be marginalized by people who will hide behind Ashanti hatred.

The probem with todays leaders is the fact that those who hold the mantle are jealous haters. You can even sense it from their speeches. Ashantis are not the only leaders in Ghana and they are not going to throw away their pride because of politics. Even if Ashantis and other Akans face punishment because of hatred, that won't do Ghana any good. Stealing the people's vote because of Ashantis won't change anything. Ashantis are proud people and will never change that for Ewes or anybody, but that doesn't mean they are more of human beings than anyone. Here is the man who was shouting at the top of his voice appealing to his fellow Northerners not to lose sight of the fact that he was one of their own and so they should vote for him. No Ghanaian leader had played the tribal card more than what Mahama did before the December 2012 elections. He should remember that many Akans are aggrieved because matured as they are, they could not also appeal to their own to vote for an Akan leader. Even if the NPP loses its case at the Supreme Court, Mahama will never win the hearts of the greater Akan population and so he should forget about any talk of uniting the country. There are two "countries" in Ghana now - Akans and non-Akans who always conspire to cheat in elections and win the presidency.

Wise words and promises from the president and we all wish him well. What we need is an ALL INCLUSIVE system where people are judged on their merits and irrespective of party affiliation, tribe or 'connections', we tap into all the human resource capacity we have to build Ghana and realise the president's vision for the country.

Whilst it is easy for the president to promise to work "to consolidate our democracy and unite the country" one hopes that he will show the leadership required to reign in the 'extremists' in his party and those who think that "WINER TAKS ALL". I hope and pray to God that the president and his party will see far beyond the differences and apparent negative actions of a few others and draw ALL Opposition Parties into his agenda for a better Ghana for we know that a nation divided cannot succeed.

I believe Ghanaians will fall in line and support our politicians once they "start to play ball" are and seen to be working in our interests. In this guise, my humble pleading is that ALL parties, one the dust is settled in the matter of the SC petition, ALL will seek to work for the common good. Growing up in Ghana, I always hated tribalism and was thankfully brought up to see BEYOND tribe and to focus on BEING A GHANAIAN. I thank my parents for that philosophy which I believe most Ghanaians also share. This is the time for reflection and for ALL parties to examine their structures and how they operate to turn things around once and for all. For the pundits, I look forward to reading and writing on their take on how we KICK OUT TRIBALISM in Ghana and PROMOTE 'GHANIANNESS' as a concept and inculcate it in our school children throughout the country. In other parts of the world, name-calling such as we have heard so many times in Ghana recently would qualify as crimes punishable by law. I hope that one day soon, we can set the same standards in Ghana as part of the constitutional provisions to guide a new 'Ghanaianness' where we all live and work together without reference to tribe, creed, religion or other negative stereotypes. We should move far away from the bad American Example which has not helped that country recently and has polarised and affected them as a nation, their economy and the rest of the world's.

Opposition or opposing voices could still be heard and their good and workable suggestions incorporated into the ruling government's agenda/policies. This would only happen through "constructive criticism" and not merely opposing every policy of the government.
In short, members of the opposition need not be part of the ruling government to make positive contributions to the development of the country. Being in opposition does not warrant one to oppose everything.

By the way, I won't say that Hilla Limann was given the respect and cooperation one would have expected. In fact, he was treated very badly even within his own party. The PNP was probably the most divided party in Ghanaian history, culminating in JJ Rawlings and his military gang taking over the country for the second time. Rawlings himself was a hated figure but you are right, he ruled by a quasi-military system until the new democratic process was ushered and his powers were limited by the constitution.

This is an opportunity for all of us to work together not as Asanti v. Ewe v. Ga v. Northerner v. Nzema etc. We should still maintain our party and individual differences but work together for the common good of the nation. I believe that is what the president is calling for and would you support that call? I hope so.

As a Ghanaian I wish Prez Mahama the best of luck in his office. However, I don't trust him to be able to deliver. He hasn't really been honest with Ghanaians regarding his state of the nation's address. He hasn't given Ghanaians a very clear clue of how he will fight deep-seated corruption and fraud in his party and gov't. The least I can say is I wish Ghana could do better under him, yet he and and many Ghanaians are in bed with deep, gargantuan fraud and corruption. It will sink the nation deeper into the abyss of poverty and political exploitation. Mahama's silence over the state attorneys' attitudes and approach to the various judgement debts, especially the Woyome saga, tells it all that, he willingly supports the few, who by any means and will owe allegiance to NDC, to steal. corruption reigns and continues unabated, thanks to the very many compromised electorate. Poverty, I'm pretty certain, will keep staring in the faces of many a ghanaian including those who short-changed their right conscience and vote for some pittance which could not last them even a day or two. As Ghana awaits the Supreme Court case challenging the results of the elections. Mahama must remember that his better Ghana agenda can only succeed inasmuch as he first holds and then the entire executive, and his appointees accountable and then strongly and insistently urge Ghanaians to demand accountability from them as the latter does the same.
