On the corruption of the trade:
"Sir, your Highness should know how our kingdom is being lost in so many ways that it is convenient to provide for the necessary remedy, since this is caused by the excessive freedom given by your factors and officials to the men and merchants who are allowed to come to this kingdom to set up shops with goods and many things which have been prohibited by us."
On the depopulation of Kongo:
"And they [the merchants] are so abominable that they carry off the sons of the land—children of this land, sons of our nobles and vassals, even members of our own family. They steal them and sell them. And this corruption and depravity is so widespread that our kingdom is being completely depopulated."
On the loss of authority:
"Many of our subjects, because of the goods and merchandise which these merchants bring, and because they are given license and freedom, have rebelled against us and gone to the bush, and have joined with the thieves who rob us. And they have taken many of our people and sold them to the white men."
On the demand for prohibition:
"Therefore, my brother, I beg of you that you send no more merchants nor goods, except wine and flour for the Mass, and teachers and doctors, and a few other things. For we have need of none of the things which they bring, and they are the cause of the ruin of our kingdom. And we ask that you order that there should not be any trade in slaves nor market for slaves in our kingdom, because it is the will of our king and lord that this be so."

The Military Clashes Between Kongo and Portugal
Afonso I died around 1542–1543, but the tensions he documented only deepened. His successors faced an increasingly aggressive Portuguese presence, particularly after the founding of Luanda (1576) and the colony of Angola to the south, which competed directly with Kongo's authority over trade routes and vassal states.
The Battle of Mbwila (1665)
The decisive rupture came at the Battle of Mbwila (also called the Battle of Ambuila) on October 29, 1665. The conflict arose from a succession dispute over a small border territory, but its deeper cause was Portugal's determination to break Kongo's independence and control the slave trade.
· The forces: King António I of Kongo led roughly 20,000–30,000 troops, including archers, spearmen, and a small contingent of musketeers. The Portuguese commander, Luís Lopes de Sequeira, fielded about 3,000–4,000 Portuguese soldiers and African allies (including Imbangala mercenaries), supported by artillery and superior firearms.
· The outcome: Despite numerical superiority, Kongo's forces were devastated by Portuguese firepower and tactical discipline. King António I was killed, and his crown and scepter were sent to Lisbon as trophies. The Portuguese captured the royal capital of São Salvador (Mbanza Kongo) shortly afterward.
· The aftermath: The battle shattered Kongo's central authority. The kingdom fragmented into competing factions, each vying for the throne with Portuguese backing. The Portuguese installed puppet kings and eventually annexed the region as a colony in the late nineteenth century, though Kongo's monarchy survived in exile and titular form into the modern era.
Why the Clashes Matter
The military clashes between Kongo and Portugal illustrate the tragic arc of the relationship: what began as a partnership between two Christian monarchies—one African, one European—ended in conquest. Afonso's letters, however, remain a powerful testament to a moment when an African king addressed European royalty as an equal, defended his sovereignty with legal and moral arguments, and foresaw the catastrophic consequences of the slave trade that would soon consume his kingdom.
