The Ghana Police Service has arrested a former police officer, who is also a landlady, following allegations of physical assault, harassment and intimidation by tenants at her property around the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA-Legon).
The arrest follows complaints by one of the tenants, identified as Lordina, who recently took to social media to recount what she described as persistent mistreatment by the landlady during her stay at the property.
Lordina alleged that her experience at the residence had been marked by frequent confrontations, verbal abuse, physical altercations and deliberate interruptions to the water supply, among other forms of intimidation.
A video of the arrest, sighted by Daily View Gh, shows the former police officer resisting attempts by police personnel to take her into custody. She was eventually handcuffed and escorted into a police vehicle.
In recounting her ordeal, Lordina also raised concerns about the landlady's dog, alleging that it had bitten tenants on several occasions.
According to her, the landlady often dismissed complaints about the animal's behaviour, insisting that the dog was only playing whenever tenants raised concerns about being attacked.
She further claimed that the landlady advised tenants who suffered dog bites to apply hot water to their wounds, arguing that the animal had received a rabies vaccination.
Beyond the alleged physical and verbal harassment, Lordina accused the landlady of interfering with tenants' access to their rented accommodation.
She alleged that the landlady changed the property's locks, leaving some tenants unable to enter rooms they had already paid to occupy.
The allegations have drawn attention to concerns about tenant safety, the responsibilities of landlords and the treatment of occupants in rented properties.
Further details regarding the circumstances of the arrest, the specific charges, if any, and the police investigation are yet to be established.
