One of the maxims of equity says that "justice is not for the indolent". I hope I got it right because I am not a lawyer. Why did he wait for 21 years before appealing his conviction. Was it because he couldn't afford a lawyer?? And he also could not provide any evidence of income he was earning before his conviction to justify the amount he was asking for?? I think his lawyers too didn't help him. He should just collect the 500k and go and chill.

May God forgive the heartlessness of the supreme court. Their decision comes across as very petty, churlish and even spiteful. Have these people no empathy or compassion? What is 500,000 cedis? Why begrudge him a decent compensation that will allow him to at least be able to put some of his life back together? Can he even build a decent house with that kind of money in today's Ghana and still have enough left to afford 2 meals a day for the rest of what remains of his life? Shame on our Supreme Court. Shame on them for their lack of understanding and empathy.

The lawyers who took up this man's case to the Supreme Court didn't do diligent work. They didn't present this devastating experience of the man ( a fellow Ghanaian) in an articulate, proportionate and impactful manner. Notwithstanding, the judges, not ordinary judges, the Supreme Court judges, have no empathy. Even the case upon which they depended to deliver this judgment was flawed. It wasn't properly decided, it was defective. Otherwise, perhaps the judges still looked down on the man as a prisoner, as an ex-convict, who doesn't deserve any respect as human being. The Bible says, "Do unto others as you want them to do unto you". These judges who parted that meargre sum of money to a man who had been wrongly incarcerated for 24 good years as compensation would have rejected a compensation of that measure and called it an insult. Instead of being compassionate they turned themselves into state attorneys arguing for the state. They say in law that, delay defeats equity. Fine, but what about other humane considerations that, he might not have had financial strength to fight his case. If the death penalty were carried out before that 24th year, what would have been his restitution. Non of that were deduced and facted into his trauma.
The lawyers can appeal to the same Supreme Court for a better and a thought through decision. And this must be a caution to the investigation entities and police prosecutors who do shoddy work. They have to realize that every life matters. If you are not sure don't write anything to finish your task. Do your job with diligence, painstakingly arriving at the truth. Bearing in mind that God will also judge you according to your work. If you place someone in a precarious situation without due diligence, you place your own self in an uncertainty and it's before you.

I really miss reading your comments. I sometimes respectfully disagree with you sometimes but on this particular instance, I will agree with you. What an insult after spending 24yrs in jail for a crime he didn't commit?

What is wrong with our judges? You same judges rendered 24yrs of an innocent soul life useless in our inhuman prisons. It took the grace of God for this guy to survive and all you have for him for the mess done to him is an u ...

There's something wrong with these judges.
They will say Birth Certificate is not proof of identity.
His lawyers didn't do a good work...3000.. can not be used to calculate a salary for 24year..he should at least break it into 4..and start from a lower figure and end up 3000..using at least a basic salary then add interest t ...

THIS IS UNFAIR.
SUBTRACT THE LAWYERS FEES FROM THE AMOUNT AND HE IS LEFT WITH NOTHING. THIS OUR POLICE PROSECUTORS ARE REALLY DOING A LOT OF HARM. IN PRISON FOR 21 YEARS AND YOU ARE INNOCENT. GOD IS THE JUDGE
I'am happy he's freed,even though he's innocent.Prison is not a good place,and I won 't advise anyone to go there.
I am shocked to the bone if our justices think 24 years of productive life of a Ghanaian is 500,000 Cedis less legal fees and all. God will punish you for using your positions to wrong this citizen for the second time. You sl ...

@KOFI TAMALE,such atrocities against the poor ignorant starts from the police crime officers to police and AG prosecuters.
The supreme Court have spoken so who am I to say anything. Seriously, am highly disappointed in the ruling.very unfortunate.
Very unfortunate..his room for appeal is closed. What an injustice. Nobody should go through this and be treated this way by the apex court.
Nonsense, what will GHc 500,000 do for a man with 24 wasted years in prison. He should appeal.
Appeal to who when it is the supreme court of Ghana that has devalued Ghanaians, a bottle of Schnapps was the value of 10 Ghana lives during the days of slavery, now this
Do the judges understand what deathrow means?
The supreme court of Ghana has just confirmed the value of life of Ghanaians
Someone spends more than 2 decades on deathrow for a crime he didn't commit and this is what the supreme court says?
This is beyond shameful, ...

Being in jail for only GH500,000 is a wicked act by the State and the supreme court. He should have been given at least, 2million cedis to start something with, since he was wrongfully jailed. Please, let's not be wicked to h ...

It time to replace the constitution with one that respects the rights of every citizen because the current one which only favours the president and his appointees.
Repent, then, and turn to ALMIGHTY GOD so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the LORD
ACTS 3:19
This is cruel.
The state including our judges wrongfully imprisoned a citizen for 24 years and the compensation for this serious failure by the state is a paltry 500,000 cedis? I cry for my people. This is shameful
I pray that the President will get to hear of this terrible miscarriage (×2 ) of justice and use his power and influence to intervene in this matter. It is making us feel sick in the stomach.
wei na mose Ghana ye good
The man deserved to be paid the full amount he asked for.
This shows what a country we have become. The highest court of Justice is the worse with the lowest sense of intergrity. Wrong convicxtion for 24years will have been millions in compansation in ahy normal country. Even asking ...

We are helping old man to succeed so why this huge amount. U deserve it but we can't give that amount to you boost.
The ¢500,000 isn't sufficient for someone who has suffered terribly and emotionally for 24 years! His lost years cannot be adequately compensated with money alone let alone a reduction in the amount he is claiming.
Even the 2.4M is woefully inadequate, he should been given at least 10M. 500K is change.
A Man suffers such injustice and abuse of his human rights and you call his request excessive? This same partisan Supreme court does not hesitate in awarding gargantuan multi million dollar judgement debt to cronies of their ...
