The Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) provides financial support to eligible tertiary students in Ghana to help them meet some of the costs of their education.

The loan can help students manage expenses while pursuing their studies, but applicants must understand the eligibility requirements and repayment rules.

To qualify, applicants must be Ghanaian citizens under 45 years of age and enrolled in an accredited undergraduate programme, such as a diploma or first degree, at a recognised public or private tertiary institution in Ghana.

Students enrolled in sandwich programmes are currently listed as ineligible, while those pursuing weekend and evening programmes may qualify.

Applicants need a valid Ghana Card, an active phone number and email address, a student ID card or official admission letter, and an e-Zwich card.

Applicants under 18 years of age may also be required to provide parental or guardian consent documents.

Students can apply online through the official SLTF website, www.sltf.gov.gh, or seek assistance at campus offices.

To apply, they must create an account, activate it using a verification code, log in to complete the application form, and upload the required documents.

Applicants must also complete biometric registration by visiting an SLTF campus or zonal office, where their fingerprints and signatures will be captured.

They should ensure that all the information provided is accurate and confirm the latest requirements before applying.

Repayment Methods and Rules

Repayment can be made through several channels, including cash or cheque payments at the SLTF head office, cheque payments at zonal offices, and monthly salary deductions arranged through an employer.

Borrowers can also make payments through Ecobank Ghana using E-Collect, GCB Bank through SmartPay, or the National Investment Bank using a customised SLTF pay-in slip.

According to the SLTF's published guidance, repayment obligations begin after the expiry of a two-year grace period, regardless of whether the borrower has secured employment. This means borrowers may be required to begin repayment even if they are unemployed when the grace period ends.

Students can also begin repaying their loans while still in school. According to the Fund, early repayments can help reduce the interest charged on the loan.

Borrowers who fail to complete the course for which they received the loan are required, under the SLTF's published guidance, to repay the full amount disbursed within one year. Students facing difficulties should contact the Fund to clarify their repayment obligations.

Borrowers can check their loan statements online through the SLTF website using their Social Security numbers.

The Fund also states that it sends loan statements by email once a year.

Ghanaians living abroad can arrange repayments through friends or family members or send money directly to the Fund after confirming their outstanding balances and the applicable exchange rates.
