Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaibu, has appealed to the government to improve public transport in the constituency, citing long waiting times, overcrowding and safety risks faced by commuters.

He has petitioned the Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, to direct Metro Mass Transit Limited to provide five dedicated buses to serve residents travelling to Accra.

Under the proposal, three buses would operate on the Weija-to-Accra route, while the remaining two would serve commuters travelling from Gbawe to Accra.

Shaibu said the growing populations of Weija, Gbawe, Tetegu and Oblogo had increased pressure on the existing transport system, making it difficult for many residents to find reliable and affordable vehicles, especially during morning and evening rush hours.

He noted that the situation affects workers, traders, students and elderly people who depend on public transport for their daily activities.

However, long queues and overcrowded stations have become major challenges for commuters travelling to Accra and other business centres.

The MP also warned that the shortage of reliable transport had pushed some residents to use unlicensed commercial vehicles and overloaded tricycles, exposing them to road safety risks.

“It is in light of the foregoing that I respectfully appeal to your good office to direct Metro Mass Transit Limited to station five (5) dedicated buses within the Weija-Gbawe Constituency as a matter of priority,” he added.

He said improved transport services would help residents travel more safely and reliably while reducing the difficulties they face in getting to work, school and other daily activities.

The petition now places the request before the Transport Minister, with the proposed deployment expected to provide additional transport options for commuters on the two busy routes if approved.
