Akyena, it is true that the universities also exist to provide students opportunities for learning, growth and transformation. But if the students are not making the necessary in their chosen fields, do you continue to waste their own time and other resources as well as resources of the university? Won't it be advisable for them to consider something else? And we all know some of the factors responsible for such subpar performances: spending or wasting lot of tsocial media, engaging in akohwi bra (enjoyment or time blowing lifestyles), plain laziness as well as cheating their way into the universities. You can cheat WAEC, but university will expose you.
Students must meet set minimum thresholds before they can be admitted to full fee paying programmes. It's not like anybody at all can just register for full fee paying programmes.
As for the bit about students right to education, that's complete garbage. You, ss a student, accept admission to UG (or any other uni), you accept the terms and conditions (which are mostly outlined in the booklets given to every freshman. There is no absolute right anywhere. Otherwise, anyone at all could just walk into UG lectures halls, labs, etc and claim right to education.
Now, you are no longer an undergraduate student, so you are expected to reason more maturely and realistically.

This is a natural extension of the free SHS concept, as understood by its supporters. The idea of mass education and grades be damned! The chutzpah that makes a JHS student with aggregate 48 feel entitled to the same spot in an elite high school as one with aggregate 7. Universities for Mr. Brantuo should award degrees to all regardless. Anything else is discrimination and infringement on the students rights. God help us.

If the University can admit people who don't qualify for admission, but their only purpose of their admission is their ability to pay the fees, and go on and perform well, why can't the University investigate the causes of those who qualified for admission, but yet didn't do well to arrest their failures? Ghana's education system works backwards. They never improvise to educate their students. A whiteman would never behave the way they are doing things in Ghana. In Canada, when a student goes to school, they school does periodic review with teachers meeting the child's parents to discuss how the student is doing in their class, and if there is any corrective measures that needs to take place, they do it. This happens from grade 1 through grade 12 before students reach university or college

Ampa, wo din ne wo kasaa sɛ @Kwasseato. The university does not admit people who are not qualified for full fee paying programmes. They admit people who are qualified for admission but whose grades cannot compete with other grades for limited places. So if there 30 places for a program whose cut off aggregate is 15. And there are 40 applicants with aggregate 6, then your aggregate 12 leaves out of the first 30. But 12 is still within the 15 cut off aggregate.

So the argument by the JCR President is flawed and doesn't make sense.

Here is a corrected and restructured version of your statement, maintaining your original tone while making it clearer, more coherent, and more impactful.
Look at this long story you have written without any merit. Senior, you haven’t made any sense at all, oo! Must you always say something even when you have nothing meaningful to contribute?
The fact that the Constitution guarantees you the right to education does not mean you should disregard academic standards and perform poorly without consequences. Assuming you were studying Nursing, Geography, or any other programme and consistently performing poorly, should the university be expected to keep you simply because you insist that you have a right to education?
At the end of the day, what kind of certificate do you expect the university to award you if you fail to meet the required academic standards? Having the right to education does not mean you are automatically entitled to a certificate regardless of your performance.
Sometimes, it is better to go home, reflect on your situation, and find something productive to do with your life rather than insist on something that you have not worked hard enough to achieve.
Bro, not everything needs to be questioned. Sometimes, you just have to understand the situation and accept that certain standards must be met.

How certain are we that, given a second chance some of these failed students wil not do better?
Look, there is more to it than meets the eye.I hild both first and second degrees from thus university in which I currently work.I am here rigbt now on the UG campus.I know every nook and cranny of this campus. My sister, Ghana has failed somewhat with support to higher education. The facilities are just not there.Life here is just horrible for the students.Residential facilities are woefully inadequate and in very bad condition.Students with no rooms sleep in lecture halls and the Hotspots have become 'hotels' at night.Corridors in departments act as bedrooms.Lecture halls are crowded.Food is expensive for the students especially those from poor homes.
Look, some go for lectures on empty stomachs. Can't Ghana given university students breakfast and supper?Come to Legon camous and see tge vast swathes of jungle lands. Some are even used by criminals around the Okponglo area to build brothels and are peddling in drugs. Now get this dangerous scenario. There is another big ghetto called Ayigbe Town behind UGMC, on the university land.It is a den of criminals and drug lords as well as prostitutes. This place and the Okponglo ghetto behing ICAG have an influence on some of our students who reside outside the main campus and are renting hostels at Okponglo,Shiashe,Bawaleshie and the surrounding areas. These ghettoes end up turning our students into druggists and this affects their academic performance.
I am a witness to this. Most of our students are into trammadol, wee and cocaine around the university campus. The university security too is too weak to deal with the menace. The Ayawaso West Wuogon Assembly too is absent. And there we go.Even within the university campus, wee pushers galore.Just go behind the Bush Canteen and you will see students in their numbers smoking wee as if it is legal per the university's rules. The security personnel also are complicit. They traverse the road nearer the ghettoes to their residence at tge old Sonitra camp site. Some even join the students in smoking wee. This is an open secret. We have a lot to deal with.

JCR president is wrong on all counts. It is the students responsibility to inform professors and administration if there are mitigating issues concerning the inability to maintain above a 1.00 GPA. Why should the University coddle students who cannot perform. They are taking up space for a more deserving student who is willing to maintain a satisfactory grade point above set standards. If you keep these students, you accelerate incompetence of students. University students should be the cream of the crop, no malcontents who cannot pass or perform to standards.

Universities are neither beauty pagents nor do they exist by themselves in a vacuum. They have a responsibility to its people. The main purpose of good education is to open their people's minds to think, to be curious, to discern, to question, --always probing, seeking solutions and solving problems. Failures play an important role in life. They are impati to try again, to do better, to improve. Unwarranted and imprudent dismissals on the other hand do the opposite. First, they traumatized the individuals and second, they are wasteful to the nation. Generally, exam failures are due to inadequate student preparation. But they can also be due to poor teaching. A university's failure to investigate the causes of their students' failure is irresponsible. It is an abdication of their commitment to the society. There should be no throw-away of intelligence. The university accepted these students because it considered them intelligent and qualified. Failure to try to access their potential is failure of the university. Besides, such needless dismissals are wasteful burden to the nation, -- a waste of both human and material resources. Such failures are indicative of the university's own failure. They must be immediately corrected. Once again, they are no human throw-aways.

Is it not possible that a good number of those students were given protocol admissions through intervention by some untouchables in our country? Are you sure that those students were able to go through the rigorous academic system that every university expects its students to be able to embrace?
