EXPLAINER: What happens if there's a tie in Ballon d'Or voting

The 2026 Ballon d’Or race is shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable in history, with each of the leading nominees presenting a strong case for winning the prestigious award.

Earlier reports indicate that voters have found it difficult to choose among this year’s nominees, with several candidates having compelling arguments for claiming the accolade.

This has raised the possibility of a tie in the voting process, prompting questions about how organisers would separate the candidates under the award’s regulations.

Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé and Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane are among the leading contenders for the award.

The three players have enjoyed impressive campaigns, strengthening their respective cases for the honour. Their achievements at club and international levels have also fuelled the debate over who deserves to win.

For the first time since 2019, the Ballon d’Or ceremony will be held outside Paris. This year’s event is scheduled to take place in London, England, in honour of Stanley Matthews, the inaugural winner of the award.

How a Tie Is Broken

To clarify the procedure in the event of a dead heat between candidates, France Football’s official regulations outline how a tie for first place should be resolved.

Articles 8 and 9 of the regulations reportedly specify the procedure to follow if two or more players receive the same number of points.

Article 8

In the event of a tie, the deadlock is broken by comparing the number of first-place votes received by the players. If the tie persists, the number of second-place votes is considered, followed by third-place votes, and so on.

If the tie remains unresolved after this process, or if an extraordinary situation or discrepancy arises during the vote count, the regulations provide for the matter to be resolved by the organisation’s designated official.

Article 9

Any dispute arising from the voting process will be resolved by the editor-in-chief of France Football in their capacity as the organiser.

The regulations therefore prioritise the player who receives the most first-place votes from the jury members.

In cases where the voting remains tied, or a dispute arises, the final decision rests with France Football’s leadership, as stipulated in the regulations.

With the voting procedure explained, attention now turns to October 26, when the winners of the 2026 Ballon d’Or are expected to be announced.

France Football has indicated that it intends to keep the winner’s identity secret until the ceremony, when the name will be revealed, in a bid to preserve the award’s suspense and credibility.
