President John Dramani Mahama has identified oil and gas, mining, agriculture, agro-processing and pharmaceuticals as key sectors offering investment opportunities in Ghana, as the government seeks to attract capital into industries that can create jobs and strengthen the economy.

Speaking during a panel discussion at the 2026 Financial Times Africa Summit on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, he said Ghana was witnessing increased interest in its oil and gas prospects, with major international energy companies expressing interest in exploration. He added that oil production had increased by 30 per cent compared with the previous year.

“Ghana has so many areas for investment opportunity,” President Mahama said.

“We have oil and gas, and there's an increased interest in our oil and gas prospects,” he added, pointing to the growing attention Ghana was receiving from international energy companies.

The President named Chevron, Shell and ExxonMobil among the companies showing interest in Ghana’s oil and gas sector, saying, “Everybody is knocking at the door to come and begin to do exploration.”

He said the increase in oil production was another positive development for the sector.

President Mahama also identified mining as one of Ghana’s traditional investment areas, noting that new mines were opening as the country continued to attract investment in its mineral resources. However, his remarks also highlighted the need to expand investment beyond the established extractive industries.

He said the government was increasingly focusing on agriculture, particularly irrigation, and agro-processing as sectors with the potential to support economic growth. Investment in these areas, he said, could help Ghana move beyond producing raw commodities and develop industries that create more value locally.

The President further identified pharmaceuticals as an important area for investment, linking the sector to the government’s efforts under the Accra Reset initiative to strengthen domestic production capacity and reduce reliance on imported essential products.

He said one of the initiative’s objectives was to increase local production of medicines consumed in Ghana, creating opportunities for investors to support pharmaceutical manufacturing and strengthen the country’s capacity to meet its healthcare needs.

His emphasis on agriculture, agro-processing and pharmaceuticals also reflects the government’s interest in diversifying investment beyond oil, gas and mining.

The President has previously argued that Ghana and other African countries must make better use of their natural resources and develop local processing industries rather than remain exporters of raw materials.

He said attracting investment across multiple sectors would be important to creating opportunities for the country’s growing youth population.
