Galamseyers use mercury to extract the gold from the gold amalgam. Galamseyers DO NOT use Sodium Cyanide ( Cyanide) because Cyanide rather dissolves gold. Mercury is a LIQUID METAL. It does NOT dissolve in water. Galamseyers use a little bit of a compound commonly known by Assayers as BORAX to refine (polish) the gold. This involves adding a small amount of borax into a crucible and heating the contents of the crucible to melt the gold which is then poured into moulds to solidify. A little bit of gas is generated. The borax does not chemically contain arsenic. Galamseyers do not use a compound called FLUX. Flux contains Lead in powder form, Silver in powder form among other chemicals. (Note: both lead and silver are collectors of gold. So Mercury forms about 99.5% of chemicals used by galamseyers. The gold bearing ore structure in Obuasi and Prestea contain ARSENIC when in the olden days and up until late 90s, both Obuasi (AGC) and Prestea (SGMC) were using ROSTING PLANTS to urn the arsenic and liberate the gold. So therefore, I find it extremely difficult to hear that galamseyers use cyanide and their activities generates arsenic, lead among other deadly chemicals. Authorities should monitor the COMMERCIAL LABORATORIES doing assaying for the mining companies. The Assay waste these laboratories generate contains high level of other dangerous chemicals such as lead, arsenic etc. How do these COMMERCIAL Laboratories dispose off these wastes? These COMMERCIAL laboratories are in Tarkwa ( two of them), Obuasi and Kumasi and some other parts of the country. The EPA must monitor them. The contamination comes from them and NOT the galamseyers. The writter is a certified ASSAYER who has worked with a number of the mining companies.
