Akuapem North MP, Sammi Awuku, has warned that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will face political consequences over the alleged sexual abuse of students at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), accusing the governing party of shielding the suspended headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai.
Awuku condemned the allegations and questioned how students could trust teachers when a school leader entrusted with their welfare was accused of misconduct.
“If a headmaster who has been entrusted with the duty of care compromises that responsibility and betrays the parents, then it becomes difficult to punish teachers if they do the same thing,” he said on UTV.
Awuku noted that although the allegations had yet to be established in court, reports that 19 girls had come forward to corroborate the claims made the matter particularly serious.
He also argued that Abdulai’s alleged political connections, including his position as NDC Juaben Constituency Secretary and reported membership of the National Film Authority board, had raised concerns about possible political protection.
“The NDC will pay for this,” Awuku warned, predicting that the controversy could damage the party’s electoral fortunes.
He commended the Ghana Education Service (GES) for directing officials to step aside as investigations continue and maintained that if the allegations against the headmaster are proven, he should be dismissed and barred from teaching.
Awuku further insisted that the matter must not fade with time, declaring that “this crime has no expiry date,” and called for accountability regardless of who is involved.
