Former Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has accused Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo of lacking commitment during his second stint with the club.

According to Ten Hag, Ronaldo featured prominently in his plans when he initially joined the club, and their relationship was positive at the time.

However, the forward’s explosive interview did not sit well with either the manager or the club, prompting them to take drastic decisions that eventually led to his departure.

“He let the team down, and he let me down, because we planned with him. I respected him a lot. But at that time, as a manager, I had to make a rational decision and keep the players I admire in,” he told British media outlet The Athletic.

The Dutch manager further disclosed that he was unhappy with Ronaldo’s work ethic, particularly his commitment to training and getting fully fit for matches.

He noted that the former Real Madrid superstar lacked the energy to run during games, which affected the team’s performance. Ten Hag also claimed that Ronaldo discouraged other players in the squad from working hard during training.

“He ran neither in possession nor out of possession. The reason was that he didn’t prepare himself. He was telling the players, ‘Save your legs at training.' Every top team has to embrace the top player, but the top player has to work for the team…” he said.
