Don’t wait until elections to challenge bad decisions - Kpebu to electorate

Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has urged Ghanaians to move beyond verbal criticism of President John Dramani Mahama’s appointment of Emelia Afi Agbenyo to the Electoral Commission (EC) and consider concrete ways to hold the government accountable.

Kpebu said repeated public complaints would not be enough if political leaders continued to make decisions they believed served their own interests rather than the public good.

“Just talking about it being bad, bad, bad, yes, it does something, but it’s not far enough,” he said. “So let’s think, what shall we do? What shall we do concretely to punish the government for this reverse in the Reset?”

He argued that citizens should not assume they must wait until the next election to respond to decisions they oppose.

“Unfortunately, now we will no longer say that wait till the next election. No, we punish you as the mistakes come along,” he said on JoyNews.

Kpebu encouraged Ghanaians to continue speaking out so their objections would reach the President, while considering ways to make the government answer for decisions that contradict its promises.

He said the appointment had created an opportunity for citizens to demand greater accountability over the independence and composition of the EC.

“The good people of Ghana will decide when they go to their polls and also in between,” he said, urging the public to “make a lot of noise” about the appointment.
