A letter from the Presidency ordering the suspension of Yaw Ampofo Ankrah as Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA) over the 2026 FIFA World Cup visa scandal has surfaced on social media.
The letter, signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama, and dated October 1, 2026, indicated that Ampofo Ankrah was suspended following allegations of visa racketeering.
It also clarified that the decision was intended to allow him to step aside while investigations continue. It did not imply that he was guilty of any wrongdoing.

“I refer to your report on allegations of visa racketeering and financial irregularities involving National Sports Authority (NSA) officials in connection with the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“His Excellency the President has directed that Yaw Ampofo Ankrah be suspended from his duties as Director-General of the NSA with immediate effect, pending the completion of the investigation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). The suspension is an administrative measure and does not constitute a finding of wrongdoing,” portions of the letter read.
The letter also indicated that Prof. Emmanuel Sarpong would assume the role on an interim basis while investigations continue and that the relevant authorities are expected to cooperate with the investigative bodies.
“During the period of suspension, Emmanuel Sarpong, National Coordinator, School and Grassroots Sports Secretary, shall act as Director-General of the NSA at the Ministry.
“Please communicate these decisions to the persons concerned and ensure a timely review. Please also ensure that all related matters taken by the Ministry are coordinated with the ongoing CID investigation. The Ministry records are preserved, and that investigation and the NSA are expected to be fully with the CID,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, investigations into the alleged visa racketeering remain ongoing.
Ampofo Ankrah, former NSA Chief Operations Officer (COO) Yaw Gyamfi Awere, and Tribe Culture Fest CEO Nana Boateng have been linked to allegations involving the collection of money for visa facilitation.
