The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take immediate steps to suspend the Headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Zakaria Abdulai, over allegations of sexual misconduct involving a female student.
The directive follows an investigation by JoyNews and investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni into the alleged incident at the school in the Ashanti Region.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, the Ministry of Education described the matter as serious and said the headmaster should be suspended pending the outcome of a full investigation.
“The Honourable Minister considers the issue serious and has directed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service to take effective immediate steps to suspend the Headmaster, Mr Zakaria Abdulai, pending full investigations into the matter,” the statement said.
The ministry also disclosed that the minister had requested the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters of the Ghana Police Service to commence investigations into the allegations.
The move is intended to ensure that the matter is thoroughly investigated, with the relevant authorities expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged misconduct.
The Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service further stressed that they would not tolerate such conduct in educational institutions across the country.
“The Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service reiterate that we would not tolerate or countenance such alleged despicable misconduct in any educational institution across the country,” the statement added.
The ministry also underscored the responsibility of teachers and school authorities to protect students entrusted to their care by parents and guardians.
“Parents and Guardians have entrusted their wards in the care of teachers whose responsibilities are to protect and safeguard the children and not abuse them,” it stated.
The allegations against the headmaster are yet to be established through the investigations announced by the authorities.
