Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (Pre-TAG), Nana Richard Owusu Asumadu, has warned that teachers could embark on a six-month strike if the government fails to pay them.
Speaking on Opemsuo Radio, he expressed frustration over what he described as the government’s failure to implement promises made to teachers, insisting that they would not continue working if their concerns remained unresolved.
“If the government fails to pay teachers, we will embark on a six-month strike,” he warned.
He also urged teachers who had received their September salaries to set aside some of the money, suggesting the anticipated industrial action could last for an extended period.
“To some of their teachers, if you have not spent your September salary, keep some because we will be on strike for a long time,” he said.
Asumadu stressed that teachers were prepared to stay away from the classroom if the government failed to meet their demands.
“If they do not pay, we will stay in the house,” he stated.
The Pre-TAG regional chairman further lamented the financial difficulties teachers face, including those approaching retirement, saying the situation was troubling.
“It is really painful; even the salaries of teachers going on retirement are not worth saying,” he said.
He also criticised what he described as a failure to implement commitments made to teachers, arguing that many promises had not translated into action.
“Most of our promises are on paper; there is no implementation,” Asumadu added.
His warning signals the possibility of prolonged industrial action if the payment concerns he raised are not addressed.
