Ghana to leverage IMF/World Bank meetings to boost investor confidence

Ghana is preparing to use the 2026 International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group (WBG) Annual Meetings in Thailand to attract fresh investment, strengthen ties with development partners and negotiate agreements to support the country’s economic development.

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, says the meetings will offer Ghana an important opportunity to engage international investors, showcase developments in the economy and build partnerships that could deliver tangible benefits for the country.

Speaking at the 132nd Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press briefing in Accra on Thursday, September 24, Dr Asiama said officials from the Ministry of Finance and the central bank would engage various investor groups during the October meetings.

He explained that the engagements would involve joint and separate briefings aimed at updating investors on Ghana’s economic performance, explaining the direction of policy and exploring opportunities for agreements where necessary.

“The annual meetings are where we get to meet our counterparts from the other side and to discuss Ghana’s economic programme… it is really an important meeting that all countries and officials do attend,” the Governor earlier said.

Beyond attracting investment, Ghana is expected to use the meetings to advance discussions with the IMF on the implementation of the Policy Coordination Instrument (PCI).

The PCI follows Ghana’s exit from the US$3 billion Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme, which supported the country’s economic recovery efforts.

Dr Asiama also disclosed that an IMF staff team had visited Ghana the previous week to discuss the implementation of the new policy framework.

He said the annual meetings would provide a further opportunity for Ghanaian authorities to engage the Fund on benchmarks and reforms to guide the implementation of the PCI.

The transition from the ECF programme to the PCI, according to the Governor, represents a shift in Ghana’s engagement with the IMF, moving from a programme involving financial support towards a framework focused on policy coordination.

The move comes as Ghana seeks to sustain its macroeconomic stabilisation gains and reinforce confidence in its economic management.

Dr Asiama also underscored the importance of international investor engagement to Ghana’s economic prospects, noting that the country depends on external partnerships to support growth and development.

He said the Ministry of Finance and Bank of Ghana teams would intensify efforts to reassure investors about the economy and attract capital into key sectors.

The IMF/World Bank meetings will present an opportunity for Ghana to communicate its economic policy direction to international stakeholders while exploring partnerships that could support investment, job creation and broader development objectives.

The Governor, however, expressed optimism about the outcome of the engagements, saying Ghana looked forward to productive discussions that would yield benefits for the country.

The 2026 IMF/World Bank Group Annual Meetings are scheduled to take place in Bangkok, Thailand, from October 12 to 18, 2026. The gathering will bring together finance ministers, central bank governors, private-sector leaders and other stakeholders from around the world.

Thailand is hosting the meetings for the second time, having previously done so in 1991.

The annual meetings serve as a platform for discussions on the global economy, financial stability, poverty reduction and strategies to promote inclusive growth and job creation.

The 2026 agenda will focus on four key areas: digital and artificial intelligence (AI) transformation; building resilience in a fragmented world; a new financial architecture for climate adaptation; and demographic change.

Representatives from the IMF and World Bank Group’s 191 member countries are expected to participate.
