The government of the Republic of Malta has released details of foreign nationals it has detained who attempted to illegally transit to Europe using the country.

According to Maltese authorities, 154 foreign nationals are being held at various centres in the country, some of whom attempted to illegally migrate to Europe using the Mediterranean Sea.

The details, which were shared on Facebook by DW Africa, showed that quite a good number of the detainees were from African countries, including Ghana and other West African countries.

The details showed that Nigeria has the highest number of detainees from the African continent, with 11, while Ghana and three other African countries had three of their citizens detained in Malta.

“Bangladesh has the highest number of detainees, with 60 nationals, followed by Syria with 17 and Nigeria with 11. Libya comes next with 10, while India has eight. Several other African countries are also represented.

“Eritrea has five detainees, while Somalia and Gambia have four each. Algeria, Morocco, Ghana and Mali have three nationals each,” DW Africa wrote on Facebook on October 10, 2026.
