In Jewish history and scripture, Cyrus the Great is treated as a hero even as a Messiah.
After Nebuchadnezzar destroyed Solomon's Temple in 587 BC and took the Jews to Babylon, they were in exile for about 50-70 years.
In 539 BC Cyrus conquered Babylon. In 538 BC, in his first year, he issued what the Bible calls the *Edict of Cyrus / Edict of Restoration* — recorded in 2 Chronicles 36:22-23 and Ezra 1:1-4: The LORD God of Heaven has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and has charged me with building Him a house in Jerusalem... let him go up to Jerusalem... and build the House of the LORD God of Israel."
What he did:
1. *Freed the captives* — allowed Jews to return to Yehud (Judah) — the Return to Zion.
2. *Funded the return* — not just permission, he gave silver, gold, livestock, and money to buy building materials.
3. *Returned the Temple vessels* — the gold and silver vessels Nebuchadnezzar had stolen from Solomon's Temple were sent back with them.
4. *Authorized the Second Temple* — which was completed and marks the start of the Second Temple period.
For that reason:
- The prophet Isaiah calls him by name 150 years before his birth and calls him God's *"anointed" — Messiah* — _Isaiah 45:1_. He is the *only non-Jewish figure in the Bible to be given that title*.
- Jews praised him in scripture as a savior to whom God gave power over other kingdoms so that he would restore them to Jerusalem.
- The Cyrus Cylinder — clay inscription found in 1879 now in the British Museum — confirms his policy of returning displaced peoples to their homelands and restoring their temples.
Secular historians also note it was rare magnanimity — most conquerors kept exiles as slaves. Cyrus reversed that. So yes — for Jews he is not just a Persian king, he is the liberator who ended the Babylonian Captivity and made the Second Temple possible.Please God used a non Jew to bring restoration. Don't mix Adjaye's rotten lifestyle with the National Cathedral project. It will be built for its spiritual significance for Ghana all these nearly 70yrs of nationhood and what the Christian people who have stood in the gap for this nation all these years. Remember Ebola is still killing people in DR Congo and when ebola and covid 19 rears itself again you cannot stop it.
