The Gambia assistant coach Jammeh Abdou has said that his side is prepared to face the Black Stars at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 29, 2026, despite the absence of some key players.

According to him, they called up a 35-man squad for camping, but some of their key players could not join the team to face the Black Stars.

He noted that although the absence of some of his players is concerning, he believes the current crop of players is ready to take on Ghana.

“We have a squad of about 30 to 35 players we called before, so we have 25 with us here. Yes, we mentioned players that are important to us, but as long as they are not here, we are relying on the players that are here currently. That’s the task for them: to do the job here.

“They are only motivated by representing the country. So, I think everybody knows the task ahead. We are focused on delivering the best result we can have tomorrow,” Jammeh told the media during an official press conference on September 28, 2026.

The Black Stars lost their first game against Côte d'Ivoire in what was a shambolic performance from most of the key players who were expected to rise to the occasion.

The Black Stars are currently bottom of Group C with zero points, the same as Somalia, while Côte d'Ivoire and The Gambia occupy the top two spots with three points each.
