Three major corridors into Accra’s Central Business District will benefit from a new contraflow arrangement for Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services starting Tuesday, 29th September 2026.
The Amasaman–Accra, Adenta–Accra and Kasoa–Accra routes have been selected for the intervention because of the high volume of commuters using them during peak periods.
Government to revive Ayalolo buses with dedicated traffic lanes
The arrangement will operate from 6 am to 9 am in the morning and 4 pm to 8 pm in the evening.
During these hours, selected sections of the corridors will allow authorised Ayalolo BRT buses to travel against the normal flow of traffic in dedicated priority lanes.
The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, working with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) and the Department of Urban Roads, said the move is part of wider efforts to improve public transport.
“The intervention forms part of Government’s broader efforts to improve public transportation, reduce congestion and provide more reliable and efficient mobility for commuters travelling into and out of Accra’s Central Business District,” the Ministry stated in a press release issued on September 28, 2026.
Private vehicles, taxis, trotros, commercial vehicles and other unauthorised road users will not be allowed to use the designated BRT lanes. The MTTD will handle traffic control and enforcement at strategic points and major intersections.
The Ministry expects the arrangement to improve the reliability and punctuality of Ayalolo BRT services, cut journey times, ease congestion on approaches to the CBD, encourage greater use of mass public transport and enhance overall mobility in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area.
Road users have been urged to cooperate with traffic officers.
A press briefing by Ayalolo BRT management was held on Monday, September 28, 2026, to provide further details.
Government said it would continue engaging transport operators, road users and other stakeholders to ensure the intervention delivers its intended benefits while maintaining road safety.
