Black Stars defender Alexander Djiku has been ruled out of the crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

According to reports, the Spartak Moscow player sustained an injury during the Black Stars’ defeat to Côte d'Ivoire in their first game, and the medical team is treating it.

An MRI scan conducted by the medical team ruled him out of the game against The Gambia, with other options set to be explored.

Before this, on September 24, 2026, Djiku admitted that he had been nursing an injury for a while but decided to honour the call-up to serve the nation in the best possible way in their bid to secure qualification.

“I had this three weeks ago. But for my nation, I wanted to be there. I will do everything to be ready for the next game,” he said.

Djiku’s possible absence will be a big blow to the team, as several key players have already withdrawn from the squad. Jonas Adjetey, who played at centre-back alongside Jerome Opoku at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, will be in line to start.

The team lost its first game against Côte d'Ivoire in what was a shambolic performance from most of the key players who were expected to rise to the occasion.

The Black Stars are currently bottom of Group C with zero points, the same as Somalia, while Côte d'Ivoire and Gambia occupy the top two spots with three points each.
