The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), in partnership with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), has taken delivery of 950,000 barrels of light sweet crude oil from Ghana’s Sankofa-Gye Nyame Field at the Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) in Sanzule, Western Region

Managing Director of TOR, Edmond Kombat, disclosed that the shipment arrived on Friday, September 25, 2026.

According to him, the delivery marks the first time a refinery in Ghana has received such a volume of crude from the Sankofa-Gye Nyame field.

He said the partnership between TOR and GNPC forms part of efforts to strengthen the link between Ghana’s upstream oil production and domestic refining, ensuring that crude produced in the country contributes to supplying the local market.

“For the first time in Ghana's history, any refinery in Ghana is receiving 950,000 barrels of crude, light sweet crude, from the Sankofa-Gye Nyame field under the leadership of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama,” he said.

Kombat said the delivery fulfils part of President Mahama’s commitment to link upstream petroleum production with downstream refining.

“The President promised Ghanaians that he was going to link the upstream and the downstream to make sure that what is produced upstream, we refine it for the local market,” he said.





He explained that sourcing crude locally could also reduce some of the costs associated with importing feedstock from distant markets.

According to him, imported crude attracts additional costs, including freight, insurance and supplier premiums.

“Now instead of us buying crude from distance, long distances, and it coming with a lot of cost in terms of our freight, as well as insurance premiums and suppliers premiums, we have gotten this crude at a cheaper price compared to if we're buying it elsewhere,” he said.

Kombat said the lower cost of locally sourced crude could support TOR’s operations and contribute to greater stability in the domestic petroleum market.

He said TOR would refine the crude and supply the resulting petroleum products to fuel stations, including through the Ghana Oil Company Limited (GOIL) and other oil marketing companies (OMCs).

“As we refine and we sell to GOIL and other OMCs, we're able to guarantee price stability at the pump,” he said.



He added that the arrangement would also contribute to Ghana’s energy security by providing a local source of crude for domestic refining.

“More importantly, for security,” he added.

The 950,000-barrel shipment provides TOR with a significant volume of feedstock as the refinery works to increase its processing activities and improve the utilisation of its facilities.

The Sankofa-Gye Nyame fields are located offshore Ghana and are among the country’s major oil-producing assets.
