NPP General Secretary hopeful Eugene Boakye Antwi has questioned the argument that the party’s 2024 defeat should be treated simply as a mistake that can be corrected by retaining the current General Secretary.

Antwi, a former Subin MP, was responding to the argument that the current leadership should be given another opportunity because it had learnt lessons from the 2024 election and started correcting the party’s mistakes.

He rejected that position, pointing to the number of parliamentary seats the NPP lost in the election.

“Are you seriously telling me that losing 50 seats in one election cycle is a mistake?” he asked on Joy News.

“Is that what you are telling me for a General Secretary to supervise a general election and lose 50 seats in one election cycle is a mistake? So if that was a mistake, we should retain him?”

Antwi compared the situation to an employee whose performance had resulted in a major loss for a company.

He argued that a General Secretary responsible for the party’s administration and election preparation should be held accountable for the outcome.

“If you went to the bank and used your family house in Accra or wherever the family house is to procure a loan, you’re given a loan of Ghc538 million, you’re going to start a business, you employ me as a general manager, in two years I waste Ghc50 million, are you going to continue me as the general manager of the company?” he asked.

Antwi said his argument was not that the economy played no role in the 2024 defeat, but that the General Secretary still had specific responsibilities in preparing the party for elections.

The NPP will elect its national officers on October 3, 2026, with Antwi among four candidates contesting the General Secretary position against incumbent Justin Kodua Frimpong, Sylvester Tetteh and Charles Dwamena.
