Lawyer and political activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has criticised the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) over what he describes as its inconsistent response to alleged attacks on lawyers and protesters.

His comments follow a statement by the GBA condemning the reported attempted arrest of Manhyia South Member of Parliament and lawyer, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, at the Accra High Court.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, involved awoman who identified herself as an officer from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) while attempting to arrest MP for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.

In a post on X on Friday, September 25, 2026, Barker-Vormawor questioned why, in his view, the association had not shown the same level of concern in previous incidents involving lawyers and protesters.

“For years the Ghana Bar Association forgot I was a lawyer too. I was at the mercy of the regime [previous government],” he said.

Barker-Vormawor recalled an incident in which he claimed he was arrested while on his way to court for allegedly failing to observe road markings, despite the road having no markings.

He also alleged that a lawyer who went to represent protesters after their arrest was slapped, claiming that the GBA subsequently opposed a Regional Bar that had spoken out about the incident.

The lawyer further mentioned the cases of law students Timothy Selikem Donkor, Agaaya Adongo and others who, according to him, were manhandled and detained after attending a protest while awaiting their call to the Bar.

He also cited the arrest of lawyer and activist Ama Governor, saying the GBA “looked away” after she was arrested following her call to the Bar.

“These are why many people accuse the GBA of partisanship,” Barker-Vormawor stated.

He, however, welcomed the association’s recent intervention following the incident involving Baffour Awuah.

“So, yes, I like the newfound voice of the GBA. I only wish it doesn’t lose it ever, so often, in 8 year cycles,” he added.
