The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has intensified efforts to tackle a recent surge in drug trafficking through the Accra International Airport (AIA) by deploying additional officers, trained sniffer dogs and new detection equipment to the facility.

The move is aimed at strengthening the screening of passengers arriving and departing from the airport and preventing the smuggling of narcotics through Ghana’s main international gateway.

The move was captured in a footage shared on X on Friday, September 25, 2026.

An official familiar with the operations disclosed to GhanaWeb that NACOC was taking additional steps to tighten security following renewed concerns over the involvement of some airport personnel in facilitating drug trafficking.

The official said more personnel are expected to be deployed to the airport, together with enhanced technology to support the detection of concealed narcotics.

“We have arrested most of them, some are in court. But recently they’ve started again,” the official said, referring to airport security personnel suspected of aiding drug couriers.

According to the official, some officers have already been arrested over alleged involvement in such activities, with several cases currently before the courts.

The official further disclosed that officers with experience in airport operations had been recalled from various parts of the country to reinforce the team at the airport.

The additional personnel, trained sniffer dogs and equipment are expected to support the screening of passengers and luggage as NACOC steps up surveillance at the facility.

Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend key suspects believed to be linked to the recent drug trafficking cases, with the Commission expected to intensify its operations in the coming days.
