Elizabeth Frances Baaba Sey (née Biney) made history in 1953 when she became the first female graduate of the University of Ghana.

Sey attended Achimota School before gaining admission to the then University College of the Gold Coast in 1950.

She subsequently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

After completing her university education, Sey became the Education Officer for Sekondi.

She later returned to Achimota School, where she became Head of the English Department and taught and mentored generations of students until her retirement in 1987.

She also served on the Board of Governors of the Ghana International School and taught at other institutions, including Wesley Girls' High School in Cape Coast and St Louis Secondary School in Kumasi.

She taught at a number of schools, including Wesley Girls’ High School, Cape Coast; Saint Louis Secondary School in Kumasi; and Achimota School in Accra. The University of Ghana named a 400-room residence hall Elizabeth Sey Hall in 2011, in her honour to commemorate her contributions to the school.

She was married to Samuel Sey, Chairman of the Barclays Bank Ghana Limited and also Chairman of the Council of the University of Ghana and they had two children.

Her contribution to education was later commemorated by the University of Ghana, which named a 400-room residence hall, Elizabeth Sey Hall, in her honour.

The hall was inaugurated in January 2012.

Elizabeth Frances Baaba Sey passed on in 1991.
