Former Deputy Minister of Communications and prominent NDC member, Victoria Lakshmi Hammah, has added her voice to social media criticism of Ghana’s First Lady, Lordina Mahama, over her fluency in the country’s official language, English.

According to the former minister, the job of the First Lady is to serve the people of the country and not to demonstrate fluency in the English language.

Taking to social media on September 24, 2026, to add her voice to the matter, she further said Ghana should rethink its obsession with what she described as “good English.”

She wrote, “First Lady, Not English Scholar.

“I struggled in the Czech Republic because English isn’t their dominant language. Perhaps Ghana should rethink its obsession with ‘good English.’ Our obsession with flawless spoken English is a colonial hangover. The First Lady’s job is to serve the people, not to pass an English examination.”

Her comments follow criticism from some social media users who have taken aim at Lordina Mahama over her command of the English language.

Some critics have been sharing clips from her previous public engagements, making mockery of her English-language delivery.
