President John Dramani Mahama has urged African leaders to ensure that public finances are managed transparently and used efficiently in the interest of citizens.

Speaking at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Thursday, September 24, 2026, President Mahama said Ghana’s fight against corruption formed part of his administration’s efforts to reset the country’s governance and economy.

“As African leaders, we must also do what is required to put our own houses in order. Whoever comes into equity must come with clean hands.

“African leadership must be transparent and accountable. We must fight corruption and ensure that every dollar of our people's money counts and is used efficiently in their interest,” he said.

President Mahama said Ghana was seeking to lead by example through his administration’s “Resetting Ghana Agenda”.

He said less than two years into his administration, the government had combined what he described as disciplined governance and fiscal prudence with “an uncompromising fight against corruption”.

According to him, the measures had contributed to what he described as a “dramatic economic turnaround”.

“Indeed, some circles describe it as the ‘Ghanaian miracle’,” he added.

However, President Mahama stressed that improvements in the country’s economic indicators must ultimately be reflected in the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.

“But macroeconomic indicators mean little if they do not translate into real improvements in our people's daily lives,” he noted.

The president further indicated that his administration was prioritising infrastructure, healthcare, social protection and job creation.
