More details are emerging on the murder of Dr Kofi Akamani, the Ghanaian academic who was reportedly murdered by his wife, Dr Betty Akamani, in Illinois in the United States of America (USA).

According to reports from members of the Ghanaian community in Illinois, the wife of the deceased allegedly shot him six times on Saturday, September 19, 2026, after the actions of Dr Kofi Akamani made her angry.

The new details indicate that the two were going through very serious divorce proceedings.

The account added that the main bone of contention in the divorce battle was the custody of their two children, who were both females.

The reports also indicated that the two were living separately while they finalised their divorce.

The children are said to be living with Dr Betty Akamani after she refused to let her estranged husband have custody of the children.

The reports, however, indicated that the wife had previously reported her husband to the police and accused him of child trafficking, which was later found to be false.

Dr Akamani had been teaching for over 15 years at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he obtained his doctorate.

He met his wife, who is an African American, at the university when she was a student studying psychology in Illinois.

She is a Research Analyst at the Illinois Network of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies (INCCRRA), Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Illinois.

She has now been slapped with multiple charges, including two counts of felony first-degree murder and one count of endangering the life or health of a child.
