Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has hit back at criticism of his defensive approach, insisting that he has no intention of abandoning the football philosophy that has defined his 47-year coaching career.
 
The Portuguese tactician was speaking at a press conference in Accra on Monday, September 21, 2026, ahead of Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia.
 
Queiroz was asked about criticism of the style of football associated with his teams and whether he would consider changing his approach during his second spell in charge of the Black Stars.
 
The experienced coach responded by pointing to the importance of winning in determining a coach’s future.
 
“Have you seen any coach lose their job because of style of play before?” Queiroz asked.
“Coaches lose their job because they don't win, not because of their style.”
 
Queiroz, who has enjoyed a coaching career spanning almost five decades, stressed that he doesn't intend to change his philosophy at this stage of his career.
 
“There is one thing that has kept me in my job for 47 years and it's not after 47 years that I'm coming to change my style,” he added.
 
Queiroz has returned to the Black Stars as Ghana seeks to rebuild after the disappointment of missing the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
 
His immediate task is to guide Ghana through the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, with the Black Stars set to face Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia in their upcoming fixtures.
