The Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, has described Africa World Airlines’ (AWA) acquisition of a new Embraer E190 aircraft as a boost to Ghana’s ambition to become a leading aviation hub in West Africa.

According to her, the addition of the aircraft to AWA’s fleet would help strengthen regional air connectivity, improve passenger experience and support economic integration across the sub-region.

She said the investment also reflected AWA’s confidence in the growth potential of the aviation industry in West Africa.

Yvonne Opare made the remarks in a speech read on her behalf at a ceremony held at the Accra International Airport on Saturday, September 19, 2026, to officially welcome AWA’s new E190 aircraft.

She said the introduction of the aircraft marked another important step towards improving air connectivity within the region and providing safe, reliable and efficient air transport services.

“The introduction of this aircraft marks another important step in strengthening regional air connectivity, enhancing passenger experience, and supporting economic integration across West Africa,” she said.

Yvonne Opare said GACL was particularly pleased to witness the investment, which she noted contributed to the broader vision of positioning Ghana as a leading aviation hub in West Africa.

She congratulated AWA’s management for its commitment to growth and operational development and expressed confidence that the new aircraft would support the airline’s expansion plans.

The ceremony was held under the theme, “Expanding Horizons: Elevating West African Connectivity with the Embraer E190 Aircraft.”
