The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has disclosed that Inaki Williams’ reason for retiring from the national team is to focus on his club career.

According to him, the Athletic Bilbao forward informed Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz about his decision, making it clear that he needed to concentrate solely on his club at this stage of his career.

The GFA spokesperson emphasized that Inaki did not show any signs of sadness or dissatisfaction regarding the team throughout his four-year stay.

“Inaki Williams spoke to the coach and the GFA president to explain his decision to retire from national team duties. His reason was to concentrate on club duties. He has been with the national team for four years now, and he has not shown any signs of being unhappy,” he told Asempa FM.

Addressing criticisms of the winger’s underwhelming statistics with the national team, Asante Twum admitted that the GFA did not expect such a decision from the player.

He urged the public to accept Inaki’s retirement and continue supporting him, noting that he served the nation with commitment.

“I admit that his numbers have not been good for the Black Stars, but we would have loved to keep him in the team. Knowing who Kurt Okraku is, if he was not convinced, there was no way he would have allowed Inaki Williams to announce his retirement. He has decided to retire from the national team, and we must accept it,” he added.

Inaki’s statistics, two goals in 28 appearances, have been widely discussed in assessing his performances for Ghana.
