Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has engaged the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, as Ghana seeks to expand the use of nuclear science and technology for national development.

The engagement comes as Ghana continues to explore the use of nuclear science in areas including healthcare, agriculture, energy, food and water security.

In a Facebook post sighted by GhanaWeb Business on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, Dr Zanetor said the meeting focused on Ghana’s partnership with the IAEA and efforts to safely apply nuclear technology across various sectors.

“I had a productive meeting with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi on the sidelines of the 70th IAEA General Conference in Vienna,” she said.

She said the discussions further strengthened the relationship between Ghana and the IAEA and reaffirmed their commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear science.

“Our discussions reaffirmed the strong partnership between Ghana and the IAEA, and our shared commitment to harnessing nuclear science and technology safely, securely and peacefully for sustainable development,” she stated.

Dr Zanetor said international cooperation would remain important as Ghana develops its nuclear sector, particularly in strengthening the country’s technical and regulatory capacity.

“As Ghana continues to advance its nuclear journey, international cooperation remains essential: from strengthening our technical and regulatory capacity to expanding the benefits of nuclear science across healthcare, agriculture, energy and other critical areas,” she added.

She further expressed her commitment to deepening Ghana’s collaboration with the IAEA to ensure that the benefits of science and technology extend across key sectors of the economy and contribute to improving the lives of Ghanaians.

“I look forward to deepening Ghana’s collaboration with the IAEA as we work to ensure that science and technology translate into tangible improvements in the lives of our people,” she said.

The 70th IAEA General Conference is being held in Vienna from September 14 to 18, 2026, bringing together representatives of member states to discuss cooperation and developments in nuclear science and technology.
