For example, in 1940's through the 60's having a few million in total asset was considered rich and having 3 or 4 cars to go along will be the envy of most upper middle, middle class and the poor.
Today there are hundreds of presumed millionaires with each trying to move into the billionaire status. If you are going to talk about $75k not being much in 1998 then tell us what the average salary of people who earn their money the honest way? Yes there are speculators, portfolio /fund manager and real estate and other high risk but high paying jobs all around. Come back in a year or two when economies take a dive and find those high rollers and ask them how much they make.

Prof., your story appears not to add up. Did you return to Ghana due to the mandatory 2-year requirement of your J-visa? If so, once you returned and stayed for those 2 years, it is not automatic that you will return to the U.S. as you would either need an employer to file an immigrant visa for you. May be if you were on an F-1 visa which allows transition to immigrant visas or permanent residency, the story may have been different. Additionally, it is inaccurate that you necessarily must take on U.S. citizenship to stay and work in the U.S. You can actually be a Ghanaian with a permanent resident status.
From a philosophical standpoint, Ghanaians who return to Ghana following graduate school may not be more patriotic than those who stay in the U.S. and still contribute to Ghana in many invaluable ways.
