The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have assured the public that no increase in public transport fares has been approved, following ongoing discussions with the Ministry of Transport.

The two transport groups said consultations on the 2026 fare review formally began on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, when their representatives met the Minister of Transport and his technical team in Accra.

The meeting focused on the unions’ proposal for an upward review of transport fares and the government’s assessment of prevailing economic conditions, including measures to stabilise the Ghana cedi.

A key issue discussed was the government’s GH¢2.00 per litre intervention on diesel, which is intended to cushion transport operators and passengers from rising operating costs.

The unions said both sides recognised the potential impact of the fuel intervention but agreed that its full effect on operating costs must be assessed alongside the proposed fare increase before a decision is taken.

“No decision to adjust transport fares has been taken,” the unions stated.

A joint team comprising representatives of the Ministry of Transport, GPRTU and GRTCC has subsequently been formed to review the various cost inputs and make recommendations on the appropriate fare structure.

The unions said the outcome of the exercise would be communicated to the public once a determination has been made.

They have therefore directed drivers, station masters and transport owners to continue charging the existing approved fares across the country until further notice.

The GPRTU and GRTCC also urged passengers and transport operators to remain calm and cooperative while the consultations continue.
