The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have assured the public that there will be no immediate increase in public transport fares.

The two transport groups said discussions with the Ministry of Transport on a possible fare adjustment are still ongoing, with no final decision having been taken on new fares.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, the groups said they presented a proposal for an upward review of public transport fares during a meeting with the Minister for Transport and his technical team on Tuesday, September 8.

“The Unions presented a proposal for an upward review of public transport fares,” the statement said.

It explained that the government had asked the groups to consider the current economic conditions and measures being introduced to stabilise the Ghana cedi.

The groups also noted that the government’s GH¢2-per-litre intervention on diesel was intended to reduce the pressure on transport operators and passengers.

“Both parties acknowledged the value of the fuel intervention and agreed that its full impact on operating costs, together with the proposal for a fare increment, requires further engagement before any determination is made on fares,” they said.

They added that a joint team comprising representatives from the Ministry of Transport, GPRTU and GRTCC had been formed to review the cost of operating public transport.

“The outcome of this exercise will be communicated to the general public in due course,” the statement said.

The transport groups therefore urged drivers, station masters and transport owners to continue charging the existing approved fares until further notice.

“We therefore urge all our members, drivers, station masters and transport owners to maintain the current approved fares until further notice,” they stated.

They also appealed to all stakeholders to remain calm and cooperate as the review process continues.
