The Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) has increased the number of operational Aayalolo buses to 128 as part of efforts to improve public transport and ease traffic congestion across the capital.

The expansion follows the repair and deployment of 48 previously grounded buses, adding to the 80 buses that were already operational when the current management took over.

Managing Director of GAPTE, Awudu Dawuda, disclosed this when the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, visited the Madina Aayalolo terminal to assess the service.

“The 80 buses that we inherited – the most important thing was for us to enhance mobility and ease congestion in the Greater Accra Region – and so we had to repair over 48 buses,” he said.

According to Dawuda, restoring the grounded buses was necessary to increase the number of vehicles available to commuters and improve mobility along Aayalolo’s various routes.

He said the 128 operational buses are currently serving passengers across the different corridors operated by the service in the Greater Accra Region.

“And these buses have been added to the 80 buses and so we currently have 128 in our corridors. If I say corridors, I am talking about the routes we are on,” he stated.

Dawuda indicated that improving the fleet remains a priority for GAPTE as the organisation seeks to provide more reliable public transport and help reduce the pressure on roads caused by increasing traffic volumes.

The minister’s visit was also aimed at identifying measures to make the Aayalolo system more efficient and responsive to the transportation needs of commuters.
