The government is set to move to the next stage of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project with the completion of the full detailed design, followed by a procurement process to select qualified contractors for the project.

Speaking to the media on September 7, 2026, the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, said the government’s immediate focus is to finalise the detailed design before commencing the procurement process for the construction of the expressway.

“The next plan is to get the full detailed design and then now begin to work out the procurement process to select a qualified contractor or contractors to get it done,” he said.

Agbodza described the Accra-Kumasi Expressway as a “generational intervention”, saying the project forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s vision to undertake a major project that will leave a lasting legacy.

“Accra Kumasi Expressway is our generational intervention. We are going to be 70 years. The president's vision is that we should do something so that the generations ahead of us to say that when we were also here, we did something that is remarkable,” he said.

He cited major infrastructure projects undertaken during the administration of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, as examples of developments that have stood the test of time.

“Dr Nkrumah and others did other things. They built the Tema Motorway, they developed the port and undertook other major projects. We also must do something significant to secure our place in history on behalf of our people,” he added.

His comments come after the Ghana Armed Forces completed the clearing of the right-of-way along the entire corridor.
