Now social media has taken over their entire time. Sources of references like dictionaries, thesaurus, atlas, etc have all been incorporated into the smart phone (voted the greatest invention of all time) but unfortunately this generation don't see it. Their focus is only on TikTok and other entertainment apps. We need a radical recalibration of their mindsets.

At my time, there were only Typewriters that were only available to the School Typist. Headmasters did not have even have them and didn't know how to type. I remember were made to use the books STUDENTS COMPANION and FIRST AID IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE. Every student was required to have copies. Understanding the very Common English language vocabularies and Tenses were requirements. I remember my Headteacher used the cane on us if we could not conjugate simple Verbs and get our Multiplication Table answers correctly. Studying Education at the University of Cape Coast, I learned that some students didn't have lanterns to study at the night and there were no Electricity lights in many towns and villages. It was certainly very bad and unfortunate for students from poor homes and economic backgrounds but students managed to do their best at school. And things started to become worse following the imposition of the JHS and SHS on Ghanaians by Efo Julor John Rawlings at a time when Teachers students did not have the requisite Teaching and Learning Materials. Yes, some students at some Schools in the North of Ghana, the Afram Plains and parts of the Volta go to School and sit on Mats and Raffia Mats to do their Studies. Can students do academically very well at school in such circumstances? Don't blame the GES because the Communities should be able to help themselves as the Kwahu and Asanteman do to help their students and Pupils. HEAVEN HELPS THOSE WHO HELP THEMSELVES.

You are right. The Practical English language textbooks were very ideal in helping students to have absolute control on the reading, understanding and writing the English language. Now, not many students at our Tertiary Institutions can write a single goods paragraph in the English language because of the imposition of the JHS and the ShS that were extremely poorly done by the Government of Efo Julor John Rawlings who himself was very poorly educated. He could not qualify from the GCE O Level to be at the Sixth Form. He could attend the Military Academy because the entry requirements were not that difficult as at now. He was academically very poor. It was Boakye Djan who helped him qualify from Flight Officer to Flight Lieutenant. How long did he remain at the Rank of his last Rank without any further promotions? He was a good Pilot but academically very dumb. That was known at the Achimota School where he attended Secondary School up to the Ordinary Level His academic performance and achievements were horribly horrible and exceedingly poor
