The captain’s armband is usually reserved for experience.

It is a symbol of trust, leadership and responsibility, traditionally handed to players who have spent years navigating the demands of senior football.

But every so often, a teenager comes along and forces that convention to be rewritten.

Vision FC’s Majeed Alidu is the latest and youngest example.

At just 17 years old, the left-back has become the youngest captain in Ghana Premier League history, taking the armband as Vision FC began the 2026/27 season.

His rise has been remarkable. Alidu made four appearances during Vision FC’s debut Premier League campaign in 2024/25 before playing 18 games the following season. Now, in his third top-flight campaign, he is not merely a regular — he is leading the team.

He began his captaincy era in style, marshalling the left side as Vision FC defeated Young Apostles 3-0 without conceding.

But Alidu is not the first teenager to be trusted with such responsibility in Ghana’s top flight.

Here are five of the youngest known GPL captains:

1. Majeed Alidu — 17, Vision FC

Alidu sits at the top of the list at 17, having been entrusted with the captaincy at an age when many players are still trying to break into senior football.

His rapid progression from four league appearances in 2024/25 to 18 in 2025/26 has now culminated in the ultimate show of confidence from Vision FC.

2. Mumuni Abubakar — 18, New Edubiase United

Before Alidu, Mumuni Abubakar was one of the remarkable young leaders of the Ghana Premier League.

Born on May 17, 1993, the defender was handed the New Edubiase captaincy while still a teenager in 2011.

His leadership came at a time when he was also making his way through Ghana's youth setup, underlining just how much responsibility had been placed on his young shoulders.

3. Karim Alhassan — 19, Hearts of Oak

In October 2009, Hearts of Oak turned to 19-year-old Karim Alhassan for leadership.

The central defender was handed the captain's armband just two days before the start of the Premier League, replacing his elder brother Hassan Mohammed, who had moved to Real Tamale United.

Hearts' technical team, led by Egyptian coach Ayman El Yamani, rewarded Alhassan for what they described as his hard work and exceptional leadership qualities.

At 19, he was already leading one of Ghana's biggest clubs.

4. Joseph Aidoo — 19, Inter Allies

Joseph Aidoo was another teenager entrusted with captaincy at a remarkably young age.

The Ghana U20 defender was named Inter Allies captain in January 2015 after establishing himself as a key member of the team.

He had played more than 25 matches in the previous campaign and had impressed with his consistency, picking up only two yellow cards.

Upon receiving the armband, Aidoo described it as a “huge step forward” and a “massive honour” in his career.

He would go on to build an impressive career that eventually took him abroad, but his leadership credentials were already evident in the Ghana Premier League.

5. Ibrahim Danlad — 20, Asante Kotoko

At 20, Ibrahim Danlad represents another generation of young Ghanaian players who were trusted with leadership at the highest domestic level.

The goalkeeper came through Ghana's youth ranks before establishing himself in senior football and being entrusted with leadership responsibilities at Asante Kotoko in 2023.
