As thinking and educated citizens in positions of authority, they therefore should have the right to make historical reference, comment, compare (as Baffoe Bonnie did) and even when absolutely necessary, openly criticize former or current govts by name. This is the requirement of a good citizen and every Ghanaian - from the President to the lowest ranking Ghanaian adult, is encouraged to do so.
It is only crooked criminal politicians and their cheap hangers-on, who are afraid of their own shadows who are the ones sensitive and frightened about the freedom of speech of judges. They are the ones who make a big deal about the public opinions of judges.

1. CJ Sophia Akuffo came out to praise free SHS and ask Ghanaians who were complaining about poor feeding of their wards to have patience with the governent.
2. CJ Anim Yeboah visited an SOE, COCOBOD and praise them for improved operations under the current government. While he did not explicitly mention the immediate past government, his remarks could be inferred to mean it was bad under the previous government before the sitting NPP governmemt took over. POV: Insult them without mentioning names.

I write as a concerned Ghanaian citizen regarding the public remarks attributed to His Lordship the Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, during his working visits on September 2, 2026, particularly at MIIF, where he questioned what had been done in the past eight years.
With greatest respect to the office, such comparison crosses the line from institutional assessment into partisan validation.
The 1992 Constitution under Article 125(1) and the Code of Conduct for Judges demand that the Judiciary remains independent and non-partisan. When political disputes inevitably end up before the Supreme Court, Ghanaians must believe the umpire has not already worn a jersey.
We must not forget our history. In June 1982, three High Court judges - Justices Sarkodie, Agyepong and Koranteng-Addow - were abducted and murdered. Their sacrifice is a permanent reminder that when the Judiciary is perceived as political, the entire democracy bleeds. We must protect it.
At a time when Afrobarometer says public trust in the courts has fallen to 35%, utterances that create a perception of bias do more harm.
I respectfully urge His Lordship to retract the partisan commentary and exercise the restraint expected of his high office. The Chief Justice must be for all Ghanaians, not for any government in power.
